Schneider is not rebadged Pentax. Samsung branded lenses are rebadged Pentax. Pentax have a green ring, Samsung, blue. Schneider are an old lens maker from yonks ago, now manufacturing in Vietnam. Superb lenses.

Are you sure? The only reason I thought this is because I have a Samsung 50-200 for my K10D, made in Vietnam, and on the lens rim is written "Schneider-Kreuznach".

What I probably should have said is that the Samsung lens is a lens built to Pentax specifications/design by another manufacturer. Is that right?

I haven't actually seen the contracts or anything All I know is a friend of mine has the GX-10 with a Schneider lens and it's branded Schneider, as per the link you showed. I have a Pentax Made Pentax and that's all I knows. Samsung may well have more than one supplier for lenses. I read a review or GX-10/K10D comparison somewhere which mentioned about the blue rings on Pentax lenses branded Samsung.

Also go for the D40 over the D40x if you decide to go down that route.. the extra megapixels is not worth the extra price (spend it on a 50mm f/1.8 which you will want to use all the time

Some other people also suggest 1Ds MkII w/ 600mm IS lens.

Agreed about the D40 over the D40x, but unfortunately the 50mm/1.8 won't autofocus with those bodies Shame, since both the D40 and the 50/1.8 are so nice and (relatively) cheap.

After a bit of research on Dpreview, it appears the Samsung and Pentax lens are the same lens from the same factory. All Sumsung lens have the name "Schneider-Kreuznach" stamped on them, as Samsung paid a license fee to put it there. Schneider-Kreuznach have nothing to do with the manufacture or design of these lenses.

So to the OP, if you can get Samsung/Schneider-Kreuznach lens, rest assured they are the same as the Pentax lenses (just rebadged). And the GX-10 differences are in the bios and cosmetic shape of the camera/lcd screen only. The only disadvantage that I know of is that the Pentax battery grip will not fit it and I don't believe Samsung make an alternative.

That's weird. Why wouldn't they just put Samsung on them? It's like Holden rebadging Isuzus as Opels.

I'm not sure what you mean.

More 2nd hand lenses as in number of different lenses or more as more are offered for sale at any one time?

Another option is K10D + 18-55mm sigma for $999 from Ted's.

Was procrastinating over acquiring one myself - apart from the alleged update coming later this month.

But you're probably better off buying a lower-cost body and a better lens.

Yeah, maybe.

I'll go to the city in a few days and see what they're all like in terms of size and things, might make decision making a bit easier.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but the results are worth it!

I just bought a D40 off e-bay. It's a refurbished one from Nikon and came with a 12 month Australian Nikon Warranty. Paid $522.00 including the 18-55 lense and all the accessories.

If the box didn't have a few marks on it it would easily be mistaken as brand new. Cables, battery etc were all in sealed bags and appeared to have never been used (still had original ties around them). The lense was also in a sealed bag and there is not a single mark on it any where.

Been very happy with it so far - the difference between this and my canon p&s is amazing. I look forward to learning how to use it properly.

BTW I found the camera's manual very good and also the camera's menus and inbuilt help also very good. If your a beginner in SLR (like me) I think it's a great choice.
