Default GPU client for ATI 2xxx and 3xxx

From the horses mouth:

4 January 2008

Several people have been curious about any news regarding a new GPU client/core. We hit a few snags and then hit the holiday break, but the team is back now. We have the new client running in our lab and we're doing some final Q&A on it. The new code is running on the latest ATI cards (2xxx and 3xxx) and getting pretty good performance so far. The performance is pretty good now (after some optimizations from Mark and Mike H.), so I'm optimistic. This does not look like a 6-month delay, more like a few week delay, but it's hard to tell -- you can't predict the unpredictable things which can come up.

Yep, I am on the same course. But they announced this already in November for the end of 2007, and nothing came. Considering that graphic cards get cheaper by the week, I don't buy anything before the new client is real and tested.

might test it on my flashed 2900xt's, probably chew too much power for hte points output so probably best to stick with normal smp.

I am a bit out of the loop regarding vidcards (as non gamer). Isn't it so that the 3xxx series requires much less power?

yeah IIRC HD3850 x 2 in CF is around 200-250 watts less than 2900XT x2 CF

That's a massive difference , considering that for folding you run the system 24/7.

Probably not the right thread to ask this, but is it possible to run both the SMP client and a GPU client simultaneously?

My work machine has a ATI 2400 video card that is not used in the office environment. Wouldn't want it to go to waste.

yes, I have 2 SMP clients and 1 GPU client running at the same time on the same system.

The upcoming GPU client will obviously work with that. For the installation of the SMP you would need Administrator rights.

Luckily where we work the IT department trusts us (Fools!) hence admin rights isn't a problem. I already have the SMP client running and giving me a nice 2200ppd (plus a spare Dual Xeon 5310 giving 1700ppd). If only Dell supported overclocking. *sigh*

Looking forward to the GPU client.

I wonder how much PPD a HD 8850 with 512 MB would yield per day.

Until somebody gets their hands on the client, nobody knows.

I think the real question is what would a 3850 yield in points against a:
1) X1950XTX
2) 2600XT
3) 3750HD

And the $ per point/day also.

sure, let me re-phrase, what is the average PPD with a 1950?

Mine gets 576ppd. Steady stream of 330point units. It's running on an A64 3200 single core at the moment.
