Default Noob question.

Sorry guys., another noob question.
In the standard molex lead the red wire is 12V and the yellow
wire is 5V are the two black wires interchangeable, can I join them
together?
Thanks in advance.

The two blacks are still the same though, you just had the coloured ones mixed up. It's fine to join the black ones together.

Red = 5V
Black = 0V
Black = 0V
Yellow = 12V

Along the same lines - does a HDD generally have sufficient current path to its chassis to forgo the ground wires altogether, assuming good electrical contact for both the PSU and HDD with the PC chassis?

Adventurous, I know, but if it can be done for a few hundred amps in a car, I don't see why not for a PC chassis. Would allow wiring up a case with only two wires for power, superneat. And you could use pretty twincore wires for that.
