Default bah! my $#!7 is leaking!

I finally got my act together and set up my system. I've been waiting all along for 1/2" barb for the intake of my Eheim 1250 but then I realised that it can run submersed so that's what I did!
Parts: Cyclone 2 w/b / Silverprop BA Rad / Eheim 1250 / re-inforced 1/2" PVC hosing and a shite load of silicone based sealant. / Esky

Problem: my set up leaks as soon as I patch up one and let it set, another one decides to leak

anyway the real question is what's the proper way to attach a hose to a barb? what i've done is i've put the sealant on the barb (all around it) and put the hose over almost straight away. do i need to let it set? Also I've put metal clamps over the top to make it real tight. I thought that it'd be ok to get away with zip ties but it doesn't work

Are you using this hosing?

If so, it needs to be clamped REALLY tight. I use worm-drive hose clamps and screw them down with a fair amount of pressure until the clamps start to visibly bite into the outer shell. I don't use any sealant at all. Make sure you push the hosing on as far as it will go onto any barbs, and clamp very firmly about halfway down the barb length.

I'm using this type of hose clamps:

Cathar, how thick are the walls of that hose? Looks pretty thick! How small a circle can you twist it into before it begins to kink? My Tygon is the 1/8" walled stuff, and while it won't kink completely very easily a sharp bend will make the hose begin to flatten somewhat.

CerealKiller, did you say you'd put sealant (Silicone?) onto the barb before placing the hose on or afterward? If you've squirted goop on the barb the hose probably isn't forming a tight seal around the barb. Also, are the barbs plastic or brass? You mentioned that the pump is underwater, so are the only places the leaks are coming from the barbs of the radiator and waterblock?

Walls are about 3mm thick, so yeah, pretty chunky.

Very hard to make it kink. Down to a 10cm diameter circle it will hold it's shape pretty well. Beyond that it does start to flatten. Down to an 8cm circle the hose will start to flatten out. Down to 6cm it will have flattened quite significantly. Below that it pretty much flattens out, but still never really kinks.

I use simalar hose clamps to those in my system. They're pretty crap in the way they clamp. Around the area where the screw is is a bit of a dead zone. There's usually very little clamping pressure there. Try using a 2nd hose clamp as close to the first as possible with the 2nd clamps dead zone oppisate the the first's clamp's. Put both on real tight and you shouldn't have anymore leaks.

I was getting leaks by just using one hose clamp with eheim hose. I was better off using two or none at all.

Instead of the silicon goop, use some thread tape (plumbers tape) on the barbs. This is all I ever use except for the hose clamps (and the hose of course).

Mred!

You obviously don'y know that much, coz that is good hose, better than the standard vinyl.

no that hose is gay

its to fat, wont go round bends, likes to be straight in the garden

vinyl is better than that stuff

if you insist on using that stuff get smaller diameter stuff and heat up the end in hot water and REALLY stretch it over the barbs

to make a nice tight seal

clamps arent to stop leaks thier to stop the hose being ripped off

my rig has ehiem tubing and dosent have any clamps at all....and no leaks ......being running for 3 months now

Dude, no need to get all crossed up about some thick hose. I actually use the same hose as in the picture above in my system.
I think the emphasis of the other posts in relation to that particular hose is based on upon the SAFETY factor.

Sure you can throw on some eheim tubing without clamps and brag about there being no leaks, but if your system springs a leak in the near future, i would laugh at you until the cows mooo home. Putting clamps on the tubing is like cheap insurance for your expensive hardware.

chill out

I use said hose but couldn't even be bothered to reply to such a rant. I even switched out my Eheim tubing for it too. The best bit about it is that it likes to bend without kinking, unlike the Eheim which started to collapse on me when used in-line after a while. Eheim is fine as long as you don't attempt to turn tight corners and don't attempt to use it in-line.
