How do you do it? Put them on a lightbox and use a macro lens? Hows the quality using that method?

Grain is expected (and usually (certainly with this case!) desired) from 3200 film. Its not perfect with finer grained film, but if i ever needed to get a big print done from a slide/neg then i'd get it drum scanned first.

This will suit my needs for essentially anything up to 12x18inches, after that then i'd get it scanned professionally.

Next question, for those of you who scan film:
What kind of files does your scanner produce? Jpegs?
I read somewhere that there are scanners that spit out 16bit raw files.
If that's true I wonder how these files compare to the ones produced by your normal DSLR?
My ole coolscan outputs bmp, jpeg, tiff and some ancient .nef raw format. bmp, tiff and nef can be scanned at 8 or 12 bit, and i believe that later models can do even more bitdepth.

tiffs, 2400dpi at around 10-12mb. plenty to work with. don't see the point in going much higher. import these into LR if you want and off you go.

Lol I've done that before. Usually with slide though and the camera can never seem to record the full range. I did it with a fluoro desk lamp. One of those long flat ones I just turned upside down and covered it with diffused paper, sat the film on top and it worked alright. Fluoros are reknowned for unpredictable colour temperatures though so it wasn't always fun trying to get it right. The biggest downfall for me was the curvature of the film.

It can be done though. Ideally you'd be putting the film on a flat surface backlit by a light with a constant brightness and temperature and put like a sheet of glass over your film to keep it flat. But then if the glass is thick or imperfect or has a colouration like most do...oh just use a scanner.

Do you just want C-41? Dont think they will touch b/w and slide.

Just some boring test shots with my Trip35+Kodak Ulrtramax 400

Some crop in LR and exposure/contrast adjustments.

The camera is ok if you get the focus right, and the lens has a nice, "dreamy" bokeh (photo #8). Only problem is that the camera overexposes by a couple of stops, is it possible that the light cells might have lost sensitivity over the years? Turned out it was an easy fix in LR though, I forgot how film is much more forgiving than digital. Its amazing how much detail is hidden in the highlights, even severely blown, even with the crappy jpegs the lab gave me.

I'd love to shoot some more with it but its a costly habbit. I didn't really do any research, just grabbed some film from BigW and developed at the lab closest to work and it ended up costing me almost a $1 a pop

Oh and I did get asked to stop taking photos that day by some security guard because "the management of the QV doesn't like photos of the building taken, for security reasons". Sure, its reasonable to think that some guy with a 30y.o. camera is just checking for cracks on the wall to plant his C4... This city is pushing me closer to a macro lens every day...

Nice chillout, I cant wait until my Canon QL17 gets here next week. I still havent finished the roll in my ricoh yet either, seems with film Im much more fussy about what shots I will take, so I havent even finished a 36 exposure roll yet.

Those shots all look a bit underexposed to me, you might have overcompensated in lr?

Thanks mate, yeah I probably overcompensated. It was a dark rainy day and this is how I remembered it but I did overdo it. I cant wait to see more film pics posted, hurry & take that Ricoh out for a walk

Really digging #6 above there mate!

some recent ones of mine:

1 - Ilford Delta 3200 Canon A2

2 - Fuji Velvia 50, Trip 35 camera

3 - Fuji Velvia 50, Trip 35 camera

Absolutly shocked and estatic that velvia 50 with a trip worked so well at night.
