Default laptop battery in or out

Hi,

Wondering if a laptop is gonna be running off the mains is it a good idea to keep the battery out of the laptop. This is assuming I don't want to charge the battery. Would this have any affect on the laptop?

Because just thinking if you're going to be mainly using your laptop with the mains plugged in wouldn't it be better to take the battery out to pre-serve battery life?

Also if I have a spare battery and hardly/never use it would the battery die? Die as in it won't hold a charge even after you charge it up.

Cheers

I have heard that it makes the battery last longer but that only depends if you can be bothered taking it out every time you connect it to the mains! I know i can never be bothered.

Yeah what I'm wondering is would it affect the laptop with the battery actually taken out? I haven't got my laptop yet but doing initial research and stuff before it arrives

if you need to charge the battery obviously leave it in

if the laptop is going to be on AC power for an extended period of time, eg an entire day or days etc, take the battery out while it is on ac power make your battery last a whole lot longer

If its usually plugged into AC power (eg, desktop replacement), drain the battery to around 50% then store it somewhere away from direct sunlight etc etc. And when you do use the battery, try to do a complete power cycle.

Either way, the battery will gradually deteriorate but you'll get a good 3 years at least, by then you'll want to move onto another laptop.

Leave your battery IN

Constantly pulling battery in and out of laptop is more likely to cause actual damage to laptop.

I ran my old centrino laptop for 3.5 years alot of that time (2 years) doing folding 24/7 , battery was still in good condition.

also for those interested. I've done a bit of research and it says if you got a spare battery and u never use it. Put it in the refrigerator (not freezer) else the battery will die.

LOL..what damage? It's a pretty well known fact...remove your battery if not using it for extended periods...it will last longer.

If you dont use battery, take it out, store it in a cool place (fridge is recommended)

If you're going to put it in the fridge I would just be careful about condensation when you decide to take it out and use it again. Probably wouldn't apply to most of people but it would be worth thinking about around here and NWA / NQLD.

I have removed the battery from my laptop. It's not really a matter of condition but but because I care about my house not burning down at some random point in time.

its always a good enough excuse for me to upgrade

my lappy is always plugged in here at work, and as i am on a foreign korean ship the electrics are just a bit dodgy, with lots of spikes and low voltage i'd say thats why its killed my fone batty and my lappy they are no where near what they used to be!

if its a desktop replacement; use the a/c

I usually run mine with the battery out, even when i'm only downstairs on AC for a few minutes..
Sure, it is a pain in the ass, but if it means the battery will last longer than 10mins in a year, i'll do it.

BTW, Laggy, crappy power should only damage the AC adapter (charger), not the battery..

Wow there's a lot of battery voodoo about..

1. Li-Ion batteries have a 2-3 year chemical life span from *manufacture*, regardless of use. They decline in old age.
2. In addition to this, they have a limited number of charge/discharge cycles. They decline toward their limit.
2. Li-Ion batteries "age" much faster when hot. So don't leave them on the dash of your car. Taking them out of the laptop if you're not using the battery can help.. if the laptop is a very poor design and allows the battery to get hot.

Putting them in the fridge is a bad idea and unnecessary. Just use a cool dark place. Cycling your battery is another good way to make it die quicker..

Was that a typo? Cycling the battery makes it die quicker??

What he said, except that Li-Po batteries don't suffer from degradation due to charging nearly as much as Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh batteries.
