Well these chips have been on the drawing board for ages, same as nvidia. Its weird to see such a gap in a true high end release since the release of the 2900XT and 8800GTX from Nvidia.

Looks like ATI are leaning to multiple GPU solutions rather than one monther chip..but i guess only time will tell.

The frequencies suggested here are actually lower than what good GDDR4 chips are capable of.

Just noting;

Given the use of GDDR5 the Beyond3D crowd are taking the published clockrates as the actual base clockrates, not the transfer rates. IE 2.2 GHz = 4.4 GTransfers, which I'd hope is an accurate assessment, otherwise...

I have looked around on the web quickly and can't find anything , but with GDDR modules has each type been limited in some way to module size?
What i mean is will GDDR5 come as 512meg modules so say one chip on a 512meg card?

If that is the case it would be an advantage for a multi GPU design. ie:less space or more RAM etc..

Samsung and Quimonda look like introducing GDDR5 with 512MBit modules while Hynix is going all alpha male puffy chested and debuting with 1GBit. Graphics memory all use a 32-bit bus per chip, the advantages of generation #5 being much higher bandwidth per chip alleviating the need for wider GPU buses and lower power consumption relative to previous generations producing less heat.

Quimonda have a ten page PDF on their site for a little light reading though I could barely find any mention on the home pages of the other two.

Hmm, with this new generation round the corner, I may as well drop my plans to get 2 x 3870X2s and wait for 2 x 4870X2s! At least by that stage they will have CrossfireX well and truly sorted!

May just buy a cheapie card till then.
