Default Coding to interact with other programs??

I've done a little searching, but since I don't really know what I'm looking for it's a tad hard. Basically i'd like to create a program which can interact directly with other software, probably in C++ (although Java would be OK).

So instead of 'emulating' a user using something like Autoit, it would be a much more robust solution capable of controlling a program directly. This sounds dodgy (my intentions are not) but i'm not looking for any handouts, just a few keywords for google to get me started. Cheers!

The main issue with those programs is that getting input from the other peice of software is difficult... bad memories of creating OCR code for autoit

Guys at work use http://www.ranorex.com/ for automation test.
A free version is available for home use and seems very powerful (C++, .Net)!

May help?
