For those who know the history of the PC soundcard business, it's great news that a Tier 1 OEM is throwing its weight around and telling Creative to piss off.

I believe this thing has linux drivers which may be the answer many people are looking for.

Hopefully Asus expand and put out some more sound cards to match the x-fi range on every level!

$@# creative.

Multi-terabyte drivers?
BSOD's galore?
Bundles of crapware in the driver?
Crapping all over community driver modders?
No DTS CONNECT or DDL?

There's more but I haven't been following. I've been too busy enjoying sound cards from other companies. I returned the last creative card I bought in disgust - and that was many, many years ago.

the d2x pcie card has issues with 780i and 790i motherboards, so you'd want to make sure the dx pcie doesn't have a similar issue.

Hopefully its not a hardware issue and a driver update can fix it.

Where does someone in Australia buy one of these Xonar cards from? Are there only 2 models at present?

The price range for these cards are the $200+ mark?

As annoying as that would be, it's not even remotely as bad as Creative's old non-PCI-spec crapola that randomly had problems with every chipset on the market.

Anyway, I've been reading some reviews on the D2X and it really looks to be a superb part. The second they release an external of 5 1/4" breakout box a-la the X-Fi, I'll buy. Hell, even if they don't I'm considering it.

There are two versions of the high end Xonar, one is pci-express x1 and the other is a normal PCI slot.

I havent seen the the basic one pictured at the start of this thread..

Here are some listing of prices..

You can find the specific model names on the ASUS website

I've found that the break out box isn't a necessary feature any more. These days all cases have USB and Audio jacks in the front. You have Audio volume controls etc on keyboards like the G15. I can't see why I'd need a break out box any more.

I'd hardly justify buying a creative product just for that breakout box. For Auzentech users have the added option of a rear DIN http://www.auzentech.com/site/produc...ension_din.php

Not to mention their treatment of Aureal.

Aureal where fantastic in the day. Just imagine what we'd have now if they'd survived?

Asus' Xonar DX sound card, Review is up

Quote:
Asus' new Xonar rings in at half the cost of the D2X, and the card itself is half the size. Naturally, then, the DX is missing some of the features and extras of its full-fat cousin. Keep reading to see how the diet Xonar fares without them.
http://techreport.com/articles.x/14500

Quote:
If you prefer digital connections, the DX's S/PDIF output is shared with its analog line and mic input port. A digital S/PDIF input port isn't provided on the port cluster, but the card does feature a four-pin auxiliary input connector.

Asus bundles the DX with an S/PDIF adapter that allows a standard TOS-Link cable to connect to the Xonar's shared digital output port. A second mounting bracket is also provided for those looking to take advantage of the card's low-profile proportions.
