I'd hang off for a couple weeks before buying any console. The USA are getting a US$100 price drop on the Elite in response to the PS3 Slim. We should get a $50-100 drop on our elites (and possibly a run out price for the 60gb pro's)

I was going to get a Pro for my young bloke's birthday on Sept 5 - I bet it will be too early then to take advantage of any cuts

By Dan Gallagher, MarketWatch
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Microsoft Corp. has cut the price of its top-end Xbox 360 gaming console by $100, matching a similar move by arch-rival Sony Corp. just last week.

In a statement Thursday morning, Microsoft (MSFT 24.36, -0.19, -0.77%) said it has reduced the price of its Xbox 360 Elite to $299. The move brings the console in line with the comparable PlayStation 3, on which Sony (SNE 26.85, -0.18, -0.67%) cut its price by $100 at an industry conference in Germany last week. See full story on PlayStation 3 price cut.

Microsoft also trimmed the price on its 20GB Xbox 360 Pro by $50, as an effort to clear out remaining consoles before discontinuing the product. The basic Xbox 360 Arcade version will remain at $199.

The move came as little surprise, as the video game industry is dealing with a five-month-long sales slump. Most of this year's hot titles are slated for release in the holiday shopping season, so analysts widely expected console makers to trim their prices to stoke demand.

"We view the Xbox price cut as a proactive measure to maintain market share and boost momentum ahead of the key [second half] selling period," wrote Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets in a note to clients.

"We expect that the combined impact of lower prices on PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware will drive incremental unit sales in the near term, while a sustained recovery is more dependent on the popularity of upcoming key titles such as 'Halo,' 'Assassin's Creed,' and 'Call of Duty.'"

Nintendo (NTDO.Y 32.54, +0.51, +1.59%) is the only console maker not to have reduced prices. The Wii has been the most popular of the next-generation consoles, but sales have seriously slowed over the last few months, leaving some analysts to speculate about a future price cut.

The Wii still sells at its original $250 price tag.

"At this point, while we do not rule out the possibility of a Wii price cut, we believe Nintendo is more likely to offer promotional bundles," Sebastian wrote.

Sales of video game hardware and software have been in a downspin for the last five months. The slowing economy and difficult comparisons with early 2008 have made it difficult for the sector to show sales growth this year.

According to data from the NPD Group, total industry sales for hardware and software in the United States for the month of July were down 29% from the same month the previous year.

Year-to-date sales totaled $8.16 billion by the end of July -- down 14% from the $9.49 billion in sales for the same period last year.

The new Elite price puts it $50 below the new PS3 price point of $499 and, remarkably, on par with the PSPgo handheld.

The Pro console will remain at $399 “while supplies last”. The Arcade, too, will remain at its current price point of $299.

What's news there to me really is that the PSPGo is about $450. :| Fark me that's expensive.

Wonder if they'll move the elite to that pro price once supplies are gone? They only hesitated on dropping the prices because they wanted to clear stock.

I'd still go a PS3 over the 360 at that price, each console being much the same may as well pay $50 for a blu-ray player even if you don't want it, however it would all depend on the sort of bundles they release for each of them. Then again I have no reason to want to buy either of them, so it's all good news to consoleless people across the globe.

Keen to see MS's Christmas bundle this year. The last few have been pretty good deals.

I'd go Harvey Norman for Elite + Halo3 + ODST for $429 I believe. Will be picking up one of these for my brother it seems.

Edit: My brother has already picked it up. HN were out of copies of Halo3 so they gave him Elite + Batman + ODST for $429. Much better, we hardly needed a third copy of Halo3.

I haven't seen better. Perhaps you could look for a HN that doesn't have any stock of Halo3 and get a newer game instead like my brother did.

Well, the pricedrop comes on the 22/9 for the Elite - it will be interesting to see what happens across the board with the prices!
