Should be great for home servers, routers and HTPCs. Wonder what sort of motherboard they support or if they will only be sold to device manufacturers and have to be soldered onto PCBs.

:D would be interesting to know when running at 1.8g what kind of performance it can provide.

Probably not all that great. It's an in-order CPU (a design that Intel hasn't used since the original Pentium, because it's slow).

If I remember correctly, Intel said that a 1.8GHz Atom would be about as quick as a 1GHz Pentium-M. Not a fast chip by modern standards, but it's cheap to build and it hardly uses any power. For UMPCs (which will almost certainly be the major market for the first Atom CPUs) it'll be fine.

The current Eee PC just has a Celeron-M. The next generation of Eee PCs will use the Atom, as will many of the other UMPCs competing against the Eee.

I've heard rumours that the slower models (~1GHz) will draw only ~1w. That's be stunning - if you had a chipset using a similar amount of power, a small amount of RAM, and a bit of solid state memory, you'd be able to power the system from USB (from another computer).

I believe asus are planning to put it in their next version of the eee pc
At first it will just have the old celeron-m

I hope they go for the Z520, as that looks like the sweet spot, an extra $20 over the Z510 and Z500 and you get high clock speeds, higher fsb and HT :)

Edit: sif beat me slatye :p i hope asus go for a higher cpu then just the base one

I also have the O2 XDA Atom. I would love to have it running with a 1.86 GHz and 3 Watt. :D I think the current Intel chip it has does round 450 Mhz, and obviously is an evil power consumer (together with WM 5/6)

hahah, I just had the same idea. Maybe the die is so small, you don't have place for sufficient cache?

It's certainly an interesting concept. You can already get PCs that plug into a PCI slot (essentially a PCI card with a CPU and RAM onboard), but of course you can only have seven of those in a system at most. USB would mean that you could have huge numbers.

I wouldn't be surprised if Larrabee (Intel's x86 compatible GPU) has a lot in common with the Atom core.

Both of them are going to be designed to be very simple, cheap, and efficient. The big difference is that Larrabee will have lots of cores (20+) on one chip.

The Atom CPUs will be available for desktops too, and I'm pretty sure that Intel has confirmed dual-core versions. This may well be the first time since the 486s where desktop systems won't even need a heatsink on the CPU. Even Via hasn't achieved that (the mini-ITX systems generally have either a big heatsink or a small HSF).

Think direct competition with Via Epia systems.
