Default Team 24 Folding Charter and Wall of Remembrance

Overclockers Australia participates in the global Folding@Home distributed computing project,
with members donating processing time for this data on their home, work or business computers.
They are known as Team 24.

First and foremost, Team 24 folds for a cure.

Team 24 folds in the spirit of the ANZACs. We were not conscripted, we are volunteers. We stand up and face our enemy, dig in and fight with courage, endurance, initiative, discipline, and mateship. We never give up or surrender, even when all hope appears to be lost and the situation is hopeless. We fight for those who cannot, our friends, our families and lastly for ourselves.

Team 24 does not discriminate. While we base our beliefs on values near and dear to the Australian and New Zealander way of life, we accept all like-minded people who wish to join the fight. We do not see your gender, age, race, sexual preference, disabilities or religious beliefs. We only see a mate who is in the trenches, fighting alongside us.

Team 24 stands side by side with our brothers- and sisters-in-arms, [H]ardOCP, OC.com, MPC, DL.tv and Team TSC Russia! in the fight. United we stand in our beliefs, together we are stronger force. We extend our mateship in the common cause to all teams.

Team 24 recognises all Folding@Home participants - from the largest team to a single anonymous donator - are equal. Every person involved in the project is preciously important and tremendously valued. Every work unit crunched and returned is a step forward to a cure.

Team 24 folds for science, the advancement of knowledge, for compassion, for humanity, for the common good. We hope that the knowledge gained will spark an idea in a very clever human's head that will become a medical breakthrough in its final evolution.

Team 24 folds for those that are battling insidious diseases like Alzheimer's Disease, Huntington's Disease, Parkinsons Disease, and Cancer. Most of us have family and friends with other diseases that we hope that folding research may have an impact on in the future.

And, most importantly: We fold, and will continue to fold for those we have lost.

Below is a list of loved ones, friends, workmates and even acquaintances whose lives and battles have had an impact on our members. We recognise those battling, and remember those who have lost. We fold for all of you. We pray that one day, we will crunch cures so that your sacrifices will not be in vain.
WE WILL BEAT THESE DISEASES.

We will remember them, lest we forget.

Current OCAU members fighting that we stand beside and support:

youngpro: Diagnosed: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, August 2008. Team 24 folds for you.
mrhunnybunny: Diagnosed: Kidney Cancer, November 2008. Team 24 folds for you.
Team 24's very own Ezee: Diagnosed: Lung Cancer, November 2009. Passed away October 5th 2010. Rest easy mate, your efforts will not be in vain.
Team 24's long term Folder Elvis Diagnosed Chronic myelogenous leukemia June 2007, Team 24 folds hard for you.

I fold for the following people as a testament of my love and remembrance of the lives lost:

My son: James Lachlan Dickins, born 27th August 2003. Living with mild haemophilia. May folding help find a cure.

My Brother-in-law: Paul Rose. Living with serious haemophilia. May folding help find a cure.

My Brother-in-law: Christopher Rose. Living with mild haemophilia. May folding help find a cure.

My Paternal Grandmother: Lyn Dickins. Passed December 2003. Suffered from Alzheimers and dementia, and died from a Stroke-related event. May folding help find a cure.

Family friend: Jodie Thomas. Passed January 2008. Suffered from adult-onset leukaemia, and died from an infection after a successful bone marrow transfusion. Leaves behind a loving husband and 7 year old son. May folding help find a BETTER cure.

Family friend: Linda McDonald. Diagnosed May 2010 with a unconfirmed type of tumor in her left kidney. Resection of kidney was successful, however will be observed closely for the next 5 years.

Maternal Grandfather: Bob Shalliker. Diagnosed 24th June 2011 with Stage IV Gastric Adenocarcinoma, plus metastases in his liver. Going into surgery as I edit this post. Devastated, this guy is my hero.
Passed away 9/4/12, 1.40pm surrounded by family. I shall miss him terribly, yet the pain is over and he is at peace. May folding help find a cure.

I also fold for folks who have suffered and who have passed:

Edit: The most painful addition so far, today 19 June 2010: My Dad, Ken "Bud" Abbott at the age of 85 of Cancer.

A friend: Fiona Waterman, died June 1992 at the age of 25, of a malignant brain tumour that supposedly "effects only older people".

Another Friend: Rona Harrold, a great lady and very close friend of our family who passed away 12 Jan 2009 at the age of 55 from Cancer.

A childhood Friend: Deb Martin, a good friend from high school days, just a couple of weeks after watching her youngster start school, on 11th Feb 2009, from Cancer.

My mother-in-law, Freda Lehmann: a survivor of three brushes with cancer, who died May 2008 suffering from Alzheimers and early onset of Parkinsons

My wife's grandfather, Anders Peter Andersen who suffered from Alzheimers and Parkinsons for years up until his death in August 1985.

and many, many others - Aunts and Uncles, cousins and other family, Air Force mates who were in the wrong job at the wrong time and finished up with cancer, and for their partners and kids who deal with the anguish of being left behind, asking "Why?"

May Folding indeed help find a cure.

This is why we need to keep those systems "turning and burning" and lets not forget it.

G.

I started Folding in August 2001 primarily as little Amy was ill with Retts syndrome. She died in November that year aged just 13.

Prior to that Gaye's Dad Ken died Nov 1998 of prostate cancer.

Joe (Gaye's brother-in-law) also died of skin & lung cancer October 2005 aged just 48!

Sadly Gaye also lost her grandparents to either Alzheimers or bowel cancer.
Her Uncle Keith in Albany WA has alzheimers, her Auntie Dulcie in Geraldton WA died of breast cancer.

It certainly gets harder as you get older as you lose more loved one's.

That's why I keep those boxen pumping out those units so hopefully Stanford can do more research into these terrible diseases.

May Folding help find a cure!

I'm Folding in remembrance of all those who have lost a loved one to Cancer.

I have too many stories of pain and suffering from those old and young, too many friends losing family too soon to something we must be able to prevent. But carried with the pain of losing someone to cancer is the fear that they may well carry this dreadful genetic legacy within them too.

I Fold for the eventual future generations who will only hear of cancer, Alzheimer's and Huntington's, as we now hear about Small Pox.

Add my daughter Margaret Heather Craddy - she was diagnosed with major congenital defects, unfortunately we lost her at 20 weeks into the pregnancy. It's a long shot but hopefully they can find a way to cure those defects in-utero.

My father-in-law suffered from two bouts of leukemia before a heart attack took him. Let's hope they can work out why white blood cells go crazy.

To everyone who has lost someone dear near or far...

I'll be honest, my initial reasons for folding were selfish ones (get points etc), but the reality is, I've had many a friend who's been lost to some form of cancer, or genetic disease.

An old family friend Bish died last year from cancer (unsure which form), which took him after many years of battle.

Grandfather who died from colon cancer.

Friends with in-utero defects (losses, and as of today one more. ~_~)

So really, while my reasons for beginning may have been selfish, I feel satisfaction (at least a little) that I'm helping in some form or another.

My condolences to all those who are so close to the lives lost from these life threatening diseases.

I fold for the science. I do it for my unborn progeny. I firmly believe we will find find a cure in our lifetimes.

For my grandfather and uncle who both died of cancer.

For my other grandfather, who died with Alzhiemer's Disease.

Let's remember the ANZAC spirit, and fold as hard as we can.

I started folding for my father, who is suffering from early onset Alzheimers disease. We dont expect him to be around for too much longer.

Also in memory of my grand father (Who actually was an ANZAC), who died of Lung Cancer on my fathers side. May he rest in peace.

Every wu i can churn out, is another step closer to a cure. Wont help my father, but might help someone else and their family prevent the suffering we have gone through.

when i first joined the forums in 2003, i was definitely 'young and dumb' [and the rest of the rhyme] and for some reason disliked the folders on OCAU. i didn't like how they all stuck together with their little folding club avatars. i thought they were all a bunch of wanky jerks just like the 3dmark wankers i hated at the same time. i thought they acted 'elite' because they were hammering big numbers i couldn't hope to match. how wrong i was, i now realise the folding group to be what it is.

folding club avatars, i had one myself for a few weeks just recently. i totally see why you would have put the 20/30/40/50k ones up back then, that was huge.

folders grouping together, now that i am in here its great. i guess i was kind of jealous about it back then because it had a bit more vocal backing from Agg and the like and i felt i couldn't join with my duron 1.2 because it was weak as piss.

and the stuff i didn't know because i resisted it?

that you would all pretty much take a bullet for one another, that many of you were donating time/effort/parts/bandwidth/money to the cause, and that actual 100% friendly competition can be had and totally enjoyed by all.

i can tell you now that last point is what keeps me coming back. i've left many things i've been enjoying due to 1 asshole acting as such and pissing me off. that just doesn't happen here and there is no motivation to 'cheat' if that were at all possible.

so i fold for everyone else. i fold for your grandme and grandpa and aunts and uncles and parents. my family is healthy and have all died naturally, so i fold for the fun of it and to help the millions that need it. just because i'm not directly affected shouldn't mean i can't donate.

Lightbulb Folding Stories

Lots of people have stories about their folding, so after hearing a rumour that someone here may be writing an article about Folding Culture, I've decided to post mine, and hope that others do too.

I've been Folding for around eight years now, and their has never been a time that some PC here (or elsewhere) hasn't been grinding away crunching numbers for OCAU during those years. Originally I use to Fold for my good friend and moderator of the OCAU Dist Comp Forums Teddy2.

However about 2.5 years ago, a good friend boky died tragically in a motorcycle accident. Boky was somewhat of a legend around OCAU and OzVfr and always had some box or other flaming away Folding, so we rapidly noticed his account dwindling after he left us. A few of us rallied around and keep his account going to this day.

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.c...y.php?s=&u=344

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...OZxZ2ZCw&hl=en

These days my small Folding Farm is split about 50/50 between boky, and helping launch the new GamingSA Folding Team.

Personally, I don't like to see anything wasted, so if my PC's can help contribute towards a cure for disease then I'm all for it and will Fold Forever.

Well thats my short story, whats yours?
