Default ADSL Alternatives for Gaming

I've just moved to an new address and attempted to have my ADSL service moved to be told that i'm on a RIMM with no available ports. I asked my provider what my alternatives were and was told that they could only offer 56k dialup!

I'm in the process of trying to contact Telstra and find out if/when they might be adding ports to this rim (i'm in a new sub-devision, how can they not have adsl here!). But knowing my luck i'm not going to get anywhere with this.

So, i'm looking for some broadband alternative as well and looking for suggestions. My internet usage is mainly for gaming, both FPS and wow (lol), but I do download TV eps so I need a reasonable download limit.

Any suggestions? Can you use a mobile/wireless service for gaming/downloading.

Oh, cable is out, they don't offer it in far north queensland.

Cheers.

They are only required when sub-dividing land to provide telephone lines enough to carry voice / 28.8k dialup connection from memory.

I.E whoever sub-divided was a tightass..

Your only options are:

Wireless internet -
-some form of 2.4g network within your area (maybe a local ISP offers it)
-3G and the likes.. pretty slack download limits however speed is decent..

Satelite Broadband - wouldn't really consider it IMO..

ISDN - as above

56k - lolno

Thanks for the reply yoda123, sadly there's no 2.4g network in my area, so the only wireless option is the NextG stuff.

I just talked to somebody from bigpond sales who told me that the are only spending money currently on improving wireless access, so I shouldn't hold my breath for a RIMM upgrade.

I guess i'll have to look at the NextG stuff, any ideas on a good provider?

telstra stoped selling ISDN homelink, so you cant get it anymore.

The only issue to take into account with the 3g network is the latency, while it won't effect wow too much, it will effect online FPS games.

This might be a long shot, but who did you apply for ADSL access through ?

When I first got broadband (like 5+ yrs ago) I was all hyped to get iinet - they told me I was on a RIM system and that was it, finished.

Applied with Internode, they told me I was on a RIM but would attempt to get a line transposition done for me - they were successful, and all it took was about a week longer then normal.

Sometimes it works, other times they cant do anything - but you need to be with a carrier who is going to push to get their service to you in the first place

As far as NextG, I have only delt with Telstra when they first released their USB modems - the product was great, nice and fast. We were having slight problems with Vista support, but its afew months on now. Their download limits were crap though thats the only thing. I also believe there is products on the market now more aimed towards "home use" of the NextG network.. i.e routers etc. A friend plays WoW on his Telstra NextG device without problems whenever he is traveling, however I cant really comment on FPS games.

in my experience nextG is worse then 14.4 dialup for gaming.

400+ (usually 1k+) latency FTL. that, and being radio based you get dropouts depending on the weather

Internode was my adsl provider, they've contacted Telstra about a line transposition, but it was rejected.

A small update since I posted earlier though. I called Telstra about what my options might be, and i'm still stuck with 56k or NextG, but when i pushed to see what I could do the rep suggested that I might try to organise a petition through local council. I called the council help centre number and they put me straight onto the local devision member for council. I gave her a run down of the problem and she understood the issue (she lives 5 mins away and does have an ADSL connection at home!). She promised to make some calls/enquiries on my behalf.

I got a phone call back from a lady that works for the a federal member not long ago. She's emailing me a petition, told me that she'll be giving him the issue to look into and talked to Telstra and gave me a date when they're possibly going to upgrade the rimm. (Still a fair way off though!)

So i'm actually a little optimistic at the moment. But i'll still look at getting a nextg service, i'll have to survive with wow for the meantime.

Is Telstra the only horse in the race for NextG, or is there other providors?

Dunno if this will help or not but my sis lives on the Sunshine Coast in an area where ADSL hasn't reached. Through some deal with "Cirrus Comms" she gets 20GB a month 512K speeds. Dont ask me how its setup, cause I dont know, but check them out as they may be able to help you somehow.

No Wireless networks in range of my house Dopefish =(

Fresh79, My understanding is you're only able to get discount rate wireless if you live in an area that doesn't have adsl, and though I can't currently get adsl, i'm in an area where it 'technically' is available.

how do i shot web?, i mean use multiquote anyway.

What town are you in? Townsville has a mob called GetOnIt who offer a wireless system. Not brilliant but better than your other options.

Tel$tra are the only ones who offer NextG. Might be worth checking if Voda or Optus have 3G in your area 'cause their wireless is -far- cheaper than Tel$tras.

Hmm. Cairns.

I don't know for sure if anyone like GetonIt are up there.

NextG is probably the best national wireless network but if someone else has 3G in Cairns then they'll be cheaper.

Linkage...

Altho I'm now told they don't service Cairns. and most of the webpage seems broken for me.
