Get the Mac, It can run OS X and Windows. Also Apple are known to have better designs.

Go with the Apple for that price and usage.

The XPSM1530 is a 15.4" laptop. I think your friend should first decide how big he wants the laptop, whether its being carted around or just left at home as a desktop replacement.

I guess the main difference between Macbook and say; the Dell XPSM1330 (I'm currently ignoring other Dell models because I don't feel they fit under your criteria of being sexy) are:
1) Dell has option of dedicated graphics, something thats not needed if you're not intending to play games
2) OS X

Moving on to the XPSM1530, I simply see it as a bigger M1330 which has an option of a better dedicated graphics card.

I suggest he should just pick between the mac/xpsm1330/xpsm1530 considering size. IMO you can't really go wrong with any of those, they're all 'good'. Looks are a personal choice, but if I was in his shoes I would get the mac. Dell's laptops are good as if you have the dedicated graphics card solution, you have the option of being able to play the occasional game.

HWK = homework? (i'm old). If that's the case:

1) be a good friend and tell him not to spend $2500 on a laptop. He could easily knock off $800-$1000 for what he's using it for.
2) If he's into looks, go for one of the basic entry-level Dell XPS1330's (for portability) or XPS1530's (for a bigger screen & better graphic options)

I'd only suggest going for a Mac if he's going to venture into MacBook Pro prices. I don't think the MacBooks are that great for their price. If you go dollar for dollar on a MacBook vs ab XPS1330, the last time I checked, the 1330 came out on top in terms of specs.

To be honest, if it's just homework, and internet use, he could probably just get one of the cheap Lenovos that BigW has and put the rest of the money towards something that he'd make better use of.

^what he said - a cheap laptop may do if it's not going to be used for anything intense. otherwise the 1330 is really good value and it's a compact size and decent looking (especially for a dell). Get the macbook if you really want to use OS X and/or want an apple. I find the 13" size a nice balance between portability and usability. If you want a bigger screen plug it into an external monitor.

Umm has she installed windows? You do know that you need to run bootcamp and install windows to use window programs? If she wnats to use msn live on her mac then search for msn and mac, or try Adium...

Buying a mac if you're used to windows is a bad idea.
