@ Vassili

Could you do away with the middle steel bar in the front to allow easier access etc for sumps and want not? I reckon u could as there is enough support right?

I say this as I plan on making something similar but without a middle support in the front to allow just that easy access etc, although mine aint going to weigh as much as your tank

Newbie: I might chuck one up later tonight, to try and inspire some more reef tanks on OCAU

MotoJohnno: Yep, Sketchup. Took a while, but its worth it to see exactly how everything will fit together.

Kosti: Im not sure about the engineering behind it, but I wouldnt recommend a 5.5' span unsupported. Generally speaking, you want a support every 3' at least.

There is a big steel stand thread on Reef Central where you could ask the question, but I wouldnt be suprised if you needed 75x50 or 100x50 RHS for a span that long unsupported.

Basically the last few weeks whenever I walk past the tank at night I can hear him thudding into the glass lids. He's always done this occasionally (hence the name) as these fish are known to do, but lately he's doing it so much he has torn off some scales and I'm worried he'll seriously injure himself. Hopefully the more space in the 6 footer, particularly the depth and foliage to hide behind, will chill him out a bit. If he does ok and doesn't stop the discus feeding etc I'll move his 3 smaller mates over and keep the 4 footer for rainbows and smaller fish (there's tetras and cherry barbs in there, not that you ever see them with the rainbows looming overhead).

I've always argued AGAINST the popular sentiment that silver sharks should be avoided because they outgrow tanks. Although they do get large, they grow quite slowly, and usually by the time they start to need a new home (a couple of years or more) you are ready to move to a bigger tank anyway, they are happy in a very wide range of conditions so you can fit them into any community tank (provided there's no very small fish for them to eat - I'm not worried about the 60 adult cardinal tetras in the discus tank) or you can easily trade them in at your LFS because they're so popular. But I guess this is a reminder that they live a long time and eventually you will need to think about giving them more space.

So hopefully he'll calm down a bit in there and not compete the discus away from the food etc. Right now they're all following him around the tank so obviously not too concerned..
In my first ever tank (2'), some of my first fish were two Bala Sharks. My black cat found them irresistible and would always jump on to the tank. Over time, they seemed to develop a fear of the colour black. Come night time, they used to thud against the side of the tank all night long. One morning, I found one dead on the floor with a blood smear on my door one foot from the top of the ceiling. I still don't know how he managed to shoot off at such an angle to hit my door at that height. Was only a small gap for him to do so.

This is her second batch of fry. Of her first batch 15 survived. Also have a melanochromis maingano holding a huge mouthful in her own 10gal tank. I left the zebra long pelvic in the main tank, as i'm not too fussed if none of the fry make it, due to already having plenty of fry (anyone want some?).

Still cant get my Protomelas taeniolatus (red empress) to hold onto a mouthful of eggs for more than a few days though. I think she has no willpower and just ends up too hungry and eats them

colouration and size mainly. The females are fare more drab and are generally smaller than males.
