Lot of this going around at the moment, My big RD just caught it, is it one eye or both eyes? thats the first part they both mean 2 different things so theres no way to suggest without knowing this.

First post in this thread. I have a 40L "picture frame" tropical tank which i have had hanging on my wall empty for a while. I used to keep it full of tetras and guppys (specific ones i couldnt tell you), but it has been empty for a while now. This weekend im going to clean it out and start the cycling process so i can get fish in there in about 2 weeks.

Previously i was young and dumb and didnt research anything so fish constantly died due to poor water quality or bad fish mixes/quantity. This time im going to do the research and do it properly

Dimensions: 4' wide, 2' tall, ~12cm deep, 40L, Tropical. Due to the narrowness of the tank i am limited to small fish only.

Questions:
1) Any tips on the cleaning/cycling process?

2) Any tips of maintence routines differing due to the un-ideal tank size. Previously i noted that about 1"-2" of water would evaporate per week. So when i then removed 2" of water, i would be replacing it with 4" for the weekly water change. Is this too much at once? (1/6th of total water)

3) what is a good quanity of fish for this enviroment?

4) which fish are best suited for this enviroment and live well together?

Edit: Photos of the tank 3 years ago when it was up and running are here: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/sh...=712722&page=8

Are you sure those dimensions are correct? I come up with nearly 90L from 4' x 2' x 12cm

1/6th water change is not too much. Most of the stuff I have read recommend around a 20% or 1/5th change. It's so narrow that I wouldn't have too many fish in there at all. Perhaps a small school of tetras or a few of guppies.

hmm ill remeasure it when i get home, but i thought those figures were correct. I guess thats impossible though. by not many are you talking 2-6? 8-12? 20? I have no idea what is "normal"

I would guess around 8-10 tetras depending on the variety you get. What sort of filtration are you using?

1 eye I would do a w.c and wait a little. if 1 eye its normally bumping but seeing as you have 2 fish maybe mel is the best move. normally only 2 eyes = infections.

I would place them in a QT tank if you have.

Yea sorry no QT tank, LFS said to add melafix for 3-5 days and do a 50-60% water change + gravel clean and all should be sweet.

Fingers crossed.

It's over six months since I finished putting the tank together and it is thriving quite well.

The Archers have grown a fair bit already, when I got them they were 9 & 10 cm or so long, now they are about 12 & 15 cm long.
The largescale archer is still the smaller of the two, even though it is supposed to grow larger than the smallscale.

The other fish have settled in and I've found the happy medium with the number of occupants.

All the fish are quite happy to be handfed, though the Archers are exceptionally skittish and can get annoying with how
easily they can get spooked at times.

The bigger one has got the accuracy thing sorted out, though the little one hasn't
quite figured out how to account for diffraction and is regularly shooting about 15 degrees
more vertically than the pellet is actually located. It doesn't stop it from trying though,
and it usually just jumps to get it's meal instead.

Ok, so Monday will be day 14 of my ich cleansing timeframe, the water temp has been at 30.5 for 2 weeks, gravel vacumed every 3 days, kept salt in the tank. I've just noticed the little cat that had the ich has white spots, however unlike the ich it's seeming to be lack of colour, like scars or something. Any chance that the ich could still be alive or is this something like it's just because of the treatment =\

Not at the moment, as the lights have already turned off and they go completely psycho if I just turn them on at night. Will definitely get one up tomorrow.

For now though, comparing it to the pic I posted when I first noticed the ich 2 weeks ago, the spots aren't raised and don't actually look like growths, whereas they definitely did the first time.

Will get one up in the morning for sure.

Hi All,

Just looking for some advice for a small fishtank i just bought for my little 4 year old daughter.

I bought her the Aqua One AquaStarts and was wondering what filter i should get for it.

i was looking at the Fluval U2 Internal Filter.

Do you think this is what i need or something better/less

Thanks in advance.

Never used one but the Fluval U2 sounds OK. Has separate particle + biological filtration so you can clean the particle section out separately which is good. And you can ditch the carbon cartridge 99.9% of the time and just give it extra biological material.
