Elephant Noses are hard to keep and rated that way by most organizations primarily for two reasons. even though they live in murky streams in the wild, the y require lots of room. Apparently the streams are too murky for collectors to establish what they like to eat, as a large percentage of aquarium elephant noses are problem eaters. They do not however, require any particularly difficult water care or supplementation, although they are more prone to acting up from less than perfect water conditions than most fish. so, test, test, test the water, if you want to keep them healthy. Among the things they might eat are chopped up bloodworms, krill, and sinking pellets.

They need slow filtration (2 small power filters better than 1 big one that creates turbulence): they are timid and need caves, and no aggressive tankmates. They eat bloodworms, mosquito larvae and blackworms, and some eat brine shrimp, krill and chopped up earthworms. They are pain in the neck to feed, especially in winter. They need dim light.

Badmans, which is a very respectable website says if you do these things, they are able to be kept successfully. Elephant noses don't breed in captivitiy and consequently fewer people know how to care for them properly.

Default Thinking about shrimp

Was visiting the LFS on the weekend and spotted some shrimp with my junior fish keepers, we've got a spare AR380 (in pink, yay!) lying around and I was thinking that it might be a good starter tank for a group of shrimp.

It will also be a chance for them (the kids) have a tank of their own which they can "help" maintain; that's the theory at least.

From what I have read they are pretty easy to look after and prolific breeders in the right conditions. Is there anything special I need to know about them?

Not really. I have a 90L tank for RCS which I pretty much ignore. Hundreds of them in there now.

yesterday and today ive lost 5 out of 7 Electric Yellows.

Anyone know why? The ones i lost range from 6-7cm to 10cm

No visible fight marks, fins are ok.

API test kit says:

0-0.25ppm Amonia
0ppm Nitrite
10ppm Nitrate
7.8 pH

temp 27c

In the tank are mainganos which are fine and breeding.
Ive got maingano fry from 1cm(found one living in the canister filter) to 5cm in the tank.

Your tank is cycling. Your ammonia should be 0.

Anyone got recommendations for a tankmate for an oscar? I'm about to move him into a new 90g and thought it would be optimal to add him to the tank at the same time as a tankmate to avoid territorial establishment for one or the other, just unsure what to put in with him.

When I first bought him, the wee little runt he was, I got him with a JD which they lived with for a number of years till one day the JD just snapped and decided the oscar looked like food, even tried taking a bite out of my sailfin pleco in the tank.. So he had to go, and the oscar has seemed lonely every since, so he needs a friend

Any ideas?

That doesn’t matter. A 5yr old tank can go through the cycling process again if something in the eco system is disturbed (e.g. filter clean with tap water, significant substrate disturbance, etc…) A cycled tank will have 0 ammonia. Ammonia spikes can also be cause by dead livestock, overfeeding if the filter isn’t able to break it down fast enough. Your nitrates should be low as well, 10ppm is still ok as long as you don’t start seeing >30ppm. You can use something like Seachem Prime to lock the ammonia but that won’t be resolving the root cause of the issue.

I though you couldnt buy that stuff off the self as it is an antibiotic and requires a vet to dispense it.

Yeah I have asked a few aquarium shops around my area and they say they can't import it, (much the same as Octozin) I am able to buy it overseas and bring it in no worries though, hence why I am asking if anyone has some.

Finally did the first prototype of my office aquaponics system. It's been cycling and just put my first few tetras in there.

I have yet to choose a plant to go on the top although I'm not sure what will survive on office lighting alone....

The system use G1/4 barbs for a water diffuser that reduces the downward force of the water returning to the system. I didn't take a photo of the top but will do later as it houses a fairly unique physical filtration system.

A mate in the office wants one and I'll be doing some fairly massive changes for the one I do for him.
