Default Budget hits laptop Salary Sacrifice for a six !!

http://www.budget.gov.au/2008-09/con...verview_26.htm

Link says it all .... basically it must be for predominantly work use and there will no tax deduction for business use.....it be interesting to see what happens to the laptop market now given the past 5-6 years of salary sacrifice fuelled demand.

Sure is .... basically if you are anything other than a laptop toting employee with predomonately work related use you are cactus ..... the rest of us can sacrifice one but we cannot depreciate a laptop which has been sacrificed.

absolutely

its fantastic that all these tax cheats can no longer salary sacrifice laptops through work for personal use.

that and considering laptops are cheaper than ever before, people should stop being tightwads and start forking out for their own tech, its not like they cant afford it.

so when does this come into affect? (and yes i don't mean effect)

what a pack of assholes! now i wont buy as many toys. I like how they have a projection of income from "ready to drink beverage sales" and how it is above zero too.

im going to see what else the fun police have done, as its going to take a lot to make up for the 3-400 bucks ill be down on a laptop

So everyone who uses a work asset for whatever personal use is a tax cheat....mmmmm.....well there are other flaws in you broad sweeping generalisation as well however I will not sidetrack this discussion dealing with them now

Hmm. Well I'm planning on doing this through work, and I'll basically end up with the lower end Dell Inspiron for $150. Work offer a $500 discount, plus a 5% discount, plus salary sacrifice.

So assuming I say 'yes, it's predominantly for work use', I'll still be able to get it right?

Strawman.

Laptops are the most obvious example of taking the piss. Look around the various fora, it's plain as day.

At that point it becomes your problem. You can sacrifice it if your employer lets you, but the onus would be on you to show that it is for work purposes.

I don't understand this.

So is salary sacrifice on laptops completely scrapped now ? Or is salary sacrifice still available as long as the laptop is used primarily for work purposes ? If it is I can just get a laptop and tell work i'm going to use it for work then right ?
