Default Broken power socket

Heya's

I have an acer travelmate that utilities a 45degree plug in power adaptor. The housing power socket (on the laptop itself) has been damaged. It has cracked and a piece of the inner housing is now missing (imagine a plastic cup that has cracked with a piece missing so it can't retain fluid poured into it). As a result the power plug does not firmly sit in the socket (it has a fair amount of play), nor does it make proper connection to the terminals, so it will not charge.

Is there a viable method to fix this at home, or is it best to send it off to acer (I'm a little impatient of wait times)?

if it's a standard socket (jaycar is your friend), you know how to solder and you don't mind opening the casing up then it may be replacable.

if any of these three criteria aren't met then you're probably better off finding a local Acer warranty and repair agent.

Might just find a rep my the sounds of it, my soldering experience consist of wiring up car electrics, which is no where near the precision of electric boards.

Acer's repair arm is Highpoint Australia. You can contact them at 1300 139 211. They recently changed their warranty repair service to be based out of Sydney and utilise DHL to get it there and back, by which you simply call them up and they organise the DHL guy. But I'm not really sure about how large their repair centre still is in Perth, it may have changed to deal more with LCD TV's as well.
