Depending on your particular work. I use gimp for some things and inkscape for others.

I tend to see it as:

Gimp = Photoshop

and

InkScape = illustrator

I have found InkScape to be awesome when doing design work, web, logos, sigs but if your processing photos then nothing beats PhotoShop.

I wouldn't recommend the gimp unless you want second-class work done.
It's really not that powerful.
It's only 'fun'

It may not have as many features as Photoshop, but considering it's a free, open-source app (Which is what OP is asking for) that does the job why should you complain?

guess that's a good point ;P
and i guess its the artist, not the tools, which matter.

Riiiight.. I've been using it for a few years now, its perfectly fine. The only thing 'second class' is the ability of the person using it.

It doesn't have the polished feel of photoshop, but concidering it has 90% of the the average user needs, its perfect - and its not $1000+. Photoshop users tend to hate it due to the awkwardness of the interface, so bear that in mind when listening to opinions on it.

Another popular alternative is Paint Shop Pro. I'm a Photoshop user through-and-through though.

I wouldn't call GIMP 'fun'. It's one of the most awkward applications I've ever used.

I wasn't aware Paint Shop Pro was free. I saw it for sale in OfficeWorks last night for $100+.
