Default Dell "mini-Inspiron" - Eee PC killer?

Just to add to the "dell cheap a$$ fan club":

Engadget are reporting (and showing pictures of) Dell's move into the "small and cheap" market. Sporting an 8.9" screen at <$500 US it may be a good contender to the Wind and the EeePC.

- more news and live pics over at Gizmodo (mmm glossy)
- bit more info at the Direct2Dell blog

There don't seem to be any cooling vents that I can see. That may mean that Dell have gone for the low-power options (Silverthorne + Poulsbo chipset) rather than the cheaper Diamondville + i945GMS.

Noticed this also. Will be interesting to see what comes of it... TBH I am more attracted to the Wind at this stage. Defeats the purpose if the units crack ~$650.

I'm sticking with the Wind too. Larger screen, HDD (given the lack of cooling, I'm guessing that the Dell has a SSD), and it's definitely available (nobody really knows when Dell will release their one).

EEEPC killer and no specs, dont you just love good journalism

all these eeepc killers going around, yet havnt seen the eeepc even bruised as of yet.

i too like the wind, but until i see real people using it i wont jump on that camp either.

i winder if the dell will come with the all so important features i have experienced:

crap screen
flimsy plastics
poor support

lmao.

it is good though, i think more competition the better. but i want to see these companies using SSD so the prices will eventually come tumbling on SSD cause at the moment its not competitive with traditional 2.5". the more companies which dont use it, the worse off we are imo.

Same, The MSI Wind seems to have the most pros and fewest cons in the current or soon to be released sub notebook market

To be fair, I think that the Dell has the best chance of being an EeePC killer. Why? Because it's Dell. Everyone knows Dell. When most people decide to buy a laptop, they either go to Harvey Norman or they get a Dell.

The Wind looks great, but I seriously doubt that it'll actually turn into an EeePC killer (because not many people have heard of MSI).

Most of the 'EeePC killers' haven't been released yet. The only one that I've seen that was really aimed at the Eee was the CloudBook. With the release of the MSI, Dell, Acer, ECS, and Gigabyte entries it should get much more interesting.

This may be so, but it still has one big feature in its favour: brand name. If given the choice between a Dell and an MSI or Asus laptop, I'd bet that most people (general consumers, not regular OCAU users) would go for the Dell simply based on the brand name.

thats a scary thing ha ha.

but true, like ipods vs samsung. brand name doesnt mean better quality.

well known is prob more to the point, dell is simply a noobs lappy and dell cater to that. so yeah, i think it will go down well. but i doubt it will kill eeepc.

The ECS looks interesting to me because it has optional integrated 3G- apparently the Dell might as well.
