Well I've already identified the catch - if the 500Gb is referred to in the same context as TPG's existing 150GB plan, there's a reluctance or failure of said users to point out that 150Gb = 40Gb. The other 110Gb are accessible only within extremely far fetched hours that goes to TPG's definition of 'offpeak'.

So what's with this new "500Gb" plan then, what's the real T&C? 50Gb useable, 450Gb "offpeak" only a hardcore torrenters would make use of?!

this is most likely the case. ideally peak could go up to 60GB, anything less would basically be a gimmick over the current 150GB plan. no official word yet on how much peak you will get. i might consider upgrading to it if you get 80GB peak but that's just wishful thinking.

Downloading HD content like TV shows / movies in 720p / 1080p i think that 500GB would be possible to reach if you made a serious effort.

I'm fairly sure that 90% of people would not get anywhere close and even those who reached over say 200-300-400gb would probably not be able to keep it up month after month.

I assume this is how the plan is viable.

Do you not possess the ability to enqueue dowloads and leave a computer on? How is 150GB = 40GB when you can easily make use of much of the extra with a bit of preparation?

I just use two torrent clients on my file server. uTorrent with scheduler for the off-peak stuff (3am-9am) and Azuerus for the peak (no scheduler). I somehow managed to get capped half way through the month for both peak and off-peak and I'm on the TPG 150gb plan.

Bring on 500gb!!!

Not a real strong business model for longevity in my opinion.
On carrier links, you don't buy volume, you buy bandwidth @ utilisation. E.g.

<insert ISP here> buys <x>Mbps @ <y%> Utilisation per month/contract period. for $<z>

Say TPG buys 1Gbps of bandwidth for 30% Utilisation per month @ $1000/month.

They have 1Gpbs of bandwidth available to their users, but run off the fact that not everyone has smoking hot modems 24x7, as long as the 30% utilisation average limit isn't exceeded over the month, $1000 is all they pay, if over the month the average utilisation is exceeded, they pay extra. TPG has 1Gbps of bandwidth available (for peak times), but only pays for 30% of it, because of the troughs in utilisation (off peak, business hours for most home users etc...).

The organsiation I work for has a bandwidth cap of a couple Gbps, but they have 1Gbps Ethernet, 622Mbps OC-12 and 155Mbps OC-3 connections (plus lots of BDSL) all around the country - that bandwidth is available for bursts when required, but we only pay for the elected bandwidth cap.

agreed...but we'll see how it all goes

everyone on both the 150gb plans and most of the 100gb business plans would probably move...

Can't be stuffed to read that many pages on Whirlpool, anyone know what the breakup is in peak/off? 50/450 wouldn't be worth it I reckon, but something like 75/425 or definately 100/400 would be awesome. I suspect itll be either 50/450 or 60/440, that's the next step up in peak quota from their other plans.

hasn't been announced yet. they're just getting feedback @ the moment. most are speculating anywhere between 50-80GB peak and 80GB peak is optimistic to say the least. i would consider upgrading to it at 60GB peak or more. else it isn't worth it over the 150GB plan as i'm struggling to even get to 80GB these days shared with a house mate! could used to do 80 by myself a few years ago...

those 15 pages @ whirlpool are mostly spam with crap like SIGN ME UP, edit: oh dang i can't get ADSL2 in my area

In a house of 4, possibley soon to be 5, we chew through 150 pretty easily. Its not so much the extra offpeak i'd be after though, it'd be the extra peak I want. If its 60 or more I'd probably upgrade to it assuming its only an extra $10 a month. Mostly because then we'd have a very slim chance of being shaped each month, we've already spent a week shaped and it sucked.

Yes, but that's making use of the cards you're dealt....

In the interest of fairness in comparison to other ISP offerings, it should be noted that TPG's 150Gb plan only comes with 40Gb peak allowance - and without said preparation, it would not be practical to make of use those other 110Gb offpeak data allowance due to the hours that they consider 'offpeak'.

With as much shit being slagged over Telstra and Optus's way for counting uploads against monthly usage, it should be noted that there are other shady ISPs doing tricks or rewording their policies to (maybe not intentionally) misrepresent their offers; including this one.
