If he's a beginner he won't be shredding any time soon anyway...

Get a Yamaha Pacifica. Then switch to something more pricey when you get good.

Nah, thats the standard S series thickness, has been for ages. The difference with the S5470 is that its the first S series to sport the 24-fret Wizard neck, and the sustain issue most likely has something to do with this new configuration.

i meant s series in general is a thinner body, hence the sustain issues/comments. which is good ones back ha ha.

i dont like the wizard neck, but for some people its a good shredding neck. my rg was a very nice tone, just hated the neck.

Learn guitar on a cheap guitar, then look around for a more expensive one.

Okay then. Just to be clear, there's no sustain issues with the S range, only with the 5470.

This'd all be a lot easier if the OP came back and told us his range and musical prefs hehe.

For a beginer, as long as its playable, get the guitar you like the look of best and can afford. Its as simple as that. If you have a guitar that you look at lying on your bedroom floor and think 'fuck I wanna play that I'll look cool' then chances are you will play it more. No point having an expensive guitar but you have to psyche yourself up to play it. Getting a hard on over what the bodies made of and the radius of the neck will come later.

This is a great starters guitar imo, genuinely versatile, (H/S/H w/5-way and a trem) and the OP can upgrade pups and hardware as he grows into it.

Yep for $200 that'd be a good choice, if you're into the rock and/or metal genres.

But as stated already, need more info to narrow the choice down any further. Otherwise it's about as easy to answer as "I want to buy a car. Tell me the perfect car to buy". Needless to say, Nigel Mansell's ideal car is probably gonna be the exact opposite of your grandma's.

except nigel isnt a begginer driver trying to figure out what type of driving he wants to do ! ha ha

i still think Les Paul is the answer as it IS the most versatile imo. yeah fat strats are good option too as they are lighter. but the narrow fretboard can be hazardous for a noob as fingering needs to be precise. not too mention a Les Paul will sound better alround for anything other than blues imo.

Imo the only category that Squier Strats and Epi Specials will top, is the "most similar to - but far inferior to - actual Strats and LPs" category.

I.e. if you absolutely have your heart set on an Epiphone/Gibson Les Paul or a Fender Strat (for whatever reason), but are a cheap beginner, then those cheap versions would probably be your default choice. Not necessarily the best quality choice, but the best at that pricepoint with those names on the headstock.

I actually played some low-level ($400-600) Ibanez RG and SZ type guitars at the shop yesterday, and they're quite playable. A very noticable step up from your average $350 guitars. And a noticable step down from the $1000+ ones.

As a Les Paul player I couldn't disagree more.
