Please help! issues with Presario V6000

Sorry im not sure if this should have been in the troubleshooting section but anyway. I have a Compaq presario V6000, have had for a little while over a year, out of warranty, basically has been working fine, then a couple days ago while watching a DVD the screen went blank, sound continued, then started to skip then stopped entirely, when i try to power it up the lights come on, no activity on the screen. I have a reasonable idea about PC's but never really had any issues or had to work on laptops. Any thoughts on what this might be?
