I really am surprised there has not been more chat about these units to be honest.

They are dirt cheap:
Shuttle K-45 - $150
C2D 2180 - $75
2GB RAM - $50
Add HDDs to suit.

I'm thinking about picking one of these up and chucking a couple of 1TB green hdds in there for storage/serving.

Anyone on here with personal experience with these units yet?

Some really cool projects out there already including adding slimline optical drives and this beauty:

Yeah I have no idea why there aren't heaps of threads on this thing. It'd make a great home server/HTPC if you could make it quieter. Runs Windows, Linux also heard it runs OSx86 straight out of the box, but you didn't hear me say that...

first i've heard of this, thanks for bringing it to my attention!

did some searching on the net, and here's what appears to be a good article:

http://www.sfftech.com/index.php?/ar...e_shuttle_k45/

EDIT:

Upon reading the article, it seems their are some significant problems with the K45, namely:
  • VGA output only
  • no space for optical drive (though one can be modded in)
  • insufficient space to properly accomodate the heatsink

But, Shuttle has also announced the K48 (http://au.shuttle.com/product_detail_spec.jsp?PI=1133), which:
  • has DVI (and VGA) output
  • space for an optical drive (from the photos is appears so, anyway)

not sure on price and australian release though. Also, with only a 100W PSU, how many disks can this actually run?

It has slots for two 3.5" disks, AFAIK the psu is enough for that, just it won't be enough for a quad core. Also it won't fit many aftermarket heatsinks, but the stock one is fine. Also the heatsink is positioned off centre from the CPU.

The K48 looks great though, with optical drive as well.

Another minor problem is only 2gb ram support.

Anyone purchased one of these yet?

This would be a perfect file server/htpc (non HD) system for my bedroom.

Shuttle K45 $150
Intel Celeron 420 $40
1GB PC-5300 $20
Samsung HD103UI $180

Total $390

There's also the annoyance that the RRP in Australia appears to be $200 when the US RRP is $US99 (I think - it sells for that, anyway).

(oh, and duke, why wouldn't you get the E1200 instead of the 420?)

I just typed 'celeron 775' into StaticIce and picked the cheapest result. I didn't realise it was only a few dollars more expensive.

I had a look at Shuttle's spec page for it, and it doesn't have a PCI OR PCI-E slot! WTF.

It's probably not designed with you in mind

(on the other hand, various news items say it has a PCI-E x1 slot, so you might be able to stuff something like:
http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/104...eforce_7300gt/
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161197
in it)

It's designed as a "greenbox" which means it is designed to run with as less as power consumption as possible, it would hardly be that if you were to be able to throw in a videocard now would it, considering it has adequate onboard

still, the lack of any PCI ports at all is a little disappointing

worse thing is the pictures show the board has the solder pads there for a pci slot

they just left it off for some reason

so it's no opticals or no pci... your choice
