Hi, I've been a lazy slack ass and haven't got my license and i finish year 12 soon, so since ill probably get a job and correspondence for uni i am gonna get a motorbike since i can travel solo on my L's.
The prob is if i wanna have lan parties i wont be able to carry my gargantuan cosmos s case on the back, and i cbf getting someone to drive me 20 k's into the country, id rather ride the bike out. In which case gives me 1 choice, a laptop + backpack. So, Are there any decent gaming laptop's, or ones that can get decent performance? Can we refer this to say, a 3dmark06 score or crysis fps (since i can compare to both on my current system. Also, is it possible to build your own laptop... say as easily as a pc? I know they're probably more fiddly, and this won't be for a while if i do this, but i cbf driving with someone else for a year of my life before i can drive alone so its probably the way imma take. Thanks in advance - maev

iv only seen a few laptops at lans i attend and they are usualy pretty crappy. often over heating. ( might of just been these models) i think they where asus.
never really herd of anyone touching the internals anything more than upgrading ram. id just say start saving. as it will be a hell of a lot more than a normal pc to get any decent performance. though i did see a lappy with Sli in it the other day so maybey google around a bit. Cheers

If you want one that can play games such as crysis you'll need a LOT of money. I'd say ~2.5k isn't unreasonable for a true 'gaming' laptop.

there is this one...
Laptop for Gaming MSI GX600 which im not sure if it is absolutely great, but it seems to hold it own for being laptop. not sure if there is better but considering you can pick it up for around 1500 or less and it will obviously go down in the future when i consider one this might be a viable machine.

a decent dell gaming lappy will set you back a fair bit
at the moment, you can't really go lower than an 8600M GT (that's about $1500-$1600 base price for a lappy with that) ... $2,7991 for a decent dual GPU gaming lappy (that's where it becomes competetive with desktops) you could just build yourself a PC and custom yourself a case or something (attatch the monitor to it even), make it flat but wide/high with straps or something (say.. just enough room for GPU/CPU HSF with a raised bit there... HDD's/optical drives flat along the mobo's axis.) or just use a small case either way more powerful and cheaper than a laptop.. easier to fix too.

What lappy are you referring to with that 2.7k price tag?
I'll just be taking it easy for a year after school so i should have plenty of time to save up money, even if it is not that worth it compared to desktop gaming rigs (which im sure it isnt, heck desktops are made cheap these days).

Have a look at Alienware. They make a gaming laptop, but be prepared to pay top dollar. And I will doubt you will find a laptop that will have decent performance in Crysis

Have you seen the size of the cosmos s irl?
i'm sure i could sit it on the back, but the fact that its something like 30kg at least, and i also need to put on a 22" screen things might become tricky... did i mention its 20km of narrow road with tonnes of kangaroos hehe, if i fall off i dont want my rig grinded into rubble spattered with roo juice.

then again, i could probably save, make a cheap, lanbox core 2 6600 or 8400 on a micro atx with sli 8800's for cheap as bananas (couldn't think of a cheap reference)... what about monitor though... im unsure.

Hello,
I recently bought a Toshiba X205-SLI1 for well under $2000 with a 3 year warranty. The CPU is a little slow but it does have SLI DDR3 8600GTs. The LCD resolution is lower than most other 17" Laptop screens but I find this beneficial because it is much easier for the 8600GTs to pump out decent framerates on the newer games at 1440x900 rather than 1680x1050 or even 1920x1200. Quick (important) specifications:
The price I paid seems very reasonable considering the hardware you get. There is also another model (cheaper) which comes with a single 8700GT. A new model (faster CPU, higher resolution LCD, etc) has also been released lately, I believe. Hope that helps. Last edited by AbooAyesha; 3rd June 2008 at 9:45 AM. |
