Default The Beauty of IS

Just a little example of just how good IS can be.
All hand-held, of course.

Camera: 20D
Lens 70-200mm f/2.8 IS

1/50th - 200mm

1/40th - 190mm (soft, but still serviceable)

Uncropped, no selective sharpening, EXIF intact (but basically - all ISO200-400)

One of my first shots with my 55-200 VR (IS) lens was of an air ambulance circling the area at 200mm. Very impressive technology, I have to say.

Impresive photos - I can't get over how clear they are..

Very good. Yea EXIF I know, but it's such a pain. I need to look for an EXIF plugin for Firefox.

At the risk of sounding like a newb, what is IS?

edit: removed.

Image Stabilisation. This little post is to show how it comes into play even when you are shooting in far below ideal shutter speeds for the focal length (to allow for hand movement)

I do not find that funny in the slightest, and please refrain from commenting on people's appearance - particularly when they aren't around to face you and comment back...

I have to say perfect sharpness, and that aside I really like the first photo. Awesome.

Wow thanks for the responses, was just a passing comment

I installed Exif viewer, as it has the original image displayed too, about to restart and test it.

Opanda works resonably well for those who use IE:

70-200 is a damn sharp bit of lens though.
I would consider the first shot acceptable coming from a 18-55 or a 17-85 (for example) but if any of my L lenses consistantly gave me results like that I'd be sending them off for calibration.

All I'm saying is that someone unfamiliar to the lens may consider it clear enough, but compared to the results from a faster shutter speed it's not.

My moral (because I'm having trouble spitting it out right): IS is great, but no one should rely on it to that extreme.
