Affordable...........................NOT
But this is "relative", and only so because DDR2 is dumped now into the market. There is apparently more DDR2 supply than demand. The question is how much will DDR3 cost in half a year or so, when Nehalem systems will become mainstream. I guess the same kit quoted above will then cost at least 1/3 less.

seeing as though you'll need a new motherboard for nahalem, it makes sense to stick to DDR2 now if you're on a budget, DDR3 wont be cheaper than it before nahalem arrives (and probably not for a while after it does)

I think I'll just buy an Q9300 with a new mobo (only got m-ATX boards ATM) and get by with that for the next couple of years using 4Gb DDR2 as I'm past torturing h/ware to within an inch of its life as a hobby

I can assure you, you will change to one of the Nehalem platforms before of that. Probably not this year, but for sure in 2009.

Yeah, sure, compare a 1600Mhz kit with 800Mhz DDR2 Come back when you learn how to compare products that are reasonably close to one another.

From that same link:
CORSAIR TWIN2X 2GB KIT PC8500 1066M# $99.00

CORSAIR TWIN3X 2GB KIT PC8500 1066M# $149.00

Looks like the difference is more like 150% to me.

Ohh thats a good price..........sorry but I did not see that though you CANNOT compare the same speeds between DDR2 and DDR3

Umm.. $99 v $149 is not a 150% difference. $149 is 50% more than $99, or expressed from the other perspective $99 is 33.33% less than $149.

Yeah, $149 is 50% more than $99, or it is 150% of $99. You can only pick one

I meant that if compared to 2GB of DDR2, the DDR3 is 150% of that cost. I had a crying child in my lap as I typed that. Still, the point is that it is nowhere near 400% of the price.

I tend to think that even though the DDR2 has better latencies, they are still roughly comparable - although the DDR3 is slower at the same speed.

try 1333 memory that's probably roughly equal to 1066 ddr2 when taking into account latency etc.

Its a new chip on a new socket - it'll be cheap, it'll be fast, it will be around for a fair while and if you want something thats a) cheap b) fast c) futureproofed you'll be getting a Nehalem*

*- unless you are like me and upgrade every 4 years or so.
