No mention of MMS or copy/paste yet..

But it does support Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), UMTS / HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100MHz), GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz), Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR..which i think would cover most radio/mobile standards you'd want to use the phone on..

Aside from the absurdity of having a price-point $50 less than the Touch, lets check my link again....

Battery life isn't getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. GPS is also a go. Apple is using A-GPS, which supplements regular satellite GPS data with info from cellular towers for faster location. (WiFi data is also worked into the mix, which should give users a pretty solid lock on where the heck they are on this planet.) Unfortunately, as expected there's no front-facing cam, and while its edges are thinner than before it's still about a millimeter thicker at the center (12.3mm over 11.6mm before). Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year, with the black 8GB going for $199 and 16GB for $299 in black or white. (Both price points require a contract, of course.) Apple will be hitting the 22 biggest markets, including the US, on July 11th. More info after the break.
So it doesn't seem the original text is related specifically to the US at all.

Data on "3" isn't horrible... The other providers are a bit steep though.

Have a LOOK at where it has been updated...

Also where they say "Both price points require a contract, of course" they AREN'T quoting anyone that’s their opinion/assumption. Its a no brainer that some contract would be involved but Engadget DONT know...i doubt most telco's in Australia have finalised the exact details yet...

Anyways i'll just agree with you for the sake of finishing this pointless debate as NO details have been released from local telco's.

Domain name is registered to someone called "emerging thought pty ltd" that doesn't seem to have a web presence. And while there is an ABN registered, there is no white pages listing or any agency called emerging thought.

Hardly the kind of organisation I would expect optus to employ to build a microsite like that for the launch of their biggest new product.
It links from the main www.optus.com.au website, so it is legit. Just dodgy seeming, so dodgy that I already cancelled my credit card and reversed the transaction before Optus put a link up on their website

Edit: also links from http://www.apple.com/au/iphone/buy/

Huh? Its clear to me that section is specifically aimed at iPhone owners in the US who want to upgrade to the newer model. It doesn't have any relevance to the preceding text at all man.

Except there's a huge link on http://www.optus.com.au that links to the two "scam" sites. And if you check the email address in the whois, there is a WealthPoint webpresence, which lists name, address and phone number. The phone number also shows up in a Google search, from various linked websites.

So either this is a very complex scam (hijacked Optus web server, running at least 3 other web servers which confirm the existance of WealthPoint) or not. And I'm personally going with that it isn't.

Edit: Looks like I did too much investigating, taking too long to respond

Expensive, but still not too bad. But you basically need a plan to get all the data anyway. Or are there pre-paids with decent data allowances (I dunno, I've never really looked).

My video was screwy, but the audio was flawless. I'm guess the server is just bogged down at the moment.

Apple always seem to sell in multiples of $50. So $250 or $300 seems quite likely. I just don't think jobs would make a big statement about keep the price even, then go back on it - especially with something as big as the iPhone. I mean, there was enough of a backlash over prices with the first one.

3G is awesome. It means it will actually work properly in Australia - not to mention it's 3x the speed of EDGE.

Where did you find that? Because I don't remember Jobs saying anything like that - I'm guessing the comments in the brackets were added in by the writer.

The reason a plan is required in the US, is due to the existing contract (from the first iPhone) with AT&T. But that won't be an issue in Aus.

Pfft.

If the PlayStation 4 came out with just 2 extra USB ports and 2 more cores, would you buy it? You'd be pissed because a next-generation product is only slightly upgraded.
The ps3 did not come out a year after the ps2. 3g is more likened to a new graphics processor. Integration with mobileme and the apps store is like the introduction of online gaming

Does anyone know if on the WP thread it was $699 for the 16GB version or the 8GB version? i assume it was the 16GB one.
