Default Stress Testing a Quad Core

Whats the best program to stress test a Quad Core (Q9300) and what program to monitor the temps.

Reason: Built a PC for a friend, just want to stress test it for 48-72 hours to make sure everything is ok before i let them take it away.

PC is running stock

Core Temp (For Temps) http://www.softpedia.com/get/Windows...ore-Temp.shtml
Prime 95 (For Stress) http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103

Or a good program called OCCT http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download

i've been enjoying realtemp http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ over coretemp lately. not because of accuracy or anything, but i find the fact that real temp records the minimum and maximum temps each core gets to and the time it occurs a lot easier to read than going through a 24hour coretemp log. Gamer mode is also sweet as

So Orthos is no good?
Or is that for Dual Cores only?

Orthos is fine, just remember to run two copies. Personally, I stress machines with a simultaneous combination of Passmark's "BurnInTest", orthos and 3Dmark06 set to loop just the two HDR tests. This will very effectively load almost all of the devices in your system at the same time, and is in my experience more effective for picking up faulty hardware than purely stressing only one or two subsystems.

Or just download and install 3dmark06...let it loop all night. PC should be good to go!! or even PCMark!

The downside to this is it won't load the sound card, the network or the CD/HDDs. Plus 3dm will either use one core and all the vid card, or all the cores and no vid card so you still need something to soak up the extra cycles, not to mention the ram that 3dm won't touch.

It's interesting to watch system power consumption change as you progress through a 3dm, based on which not all of the 3dm tests are equal in loading.

a while back i was pointed to ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/ to grab the latest copy of prime95 (seems to be p95v256.zip now) and it seems to be able to run multiple threads and i get 100% usage on all 4 cores when i run it.

I think all the files in there are beta though so might have to be slightly careful.

Prime95 or OCCT /w RealTemp. OCCT uses the Prime95 algorithm, and from experience seems to find instabilities faster then Prime95. It's RAM tester is also one of the best.
