The new Hailfire is up for sale on Amazon, won't be out for another 1-2 months here so it's a nice buy

Can someone here shed some light on this for me, as far as I can see nerf uses compressed air to fire, which to the letter of the law would make them a firearm for the purposes of the prohibited Imports regs 1956...

My question (And I will be posing it to customs and the AG's office next week) is why is Nerf ok, when an Airsoft weapon operates on the same principle but is illegal. Unless their is something I am missing with Nerf Guns?

Because a nerf gun isn't able to take an eye out. It's much less powerful than an airsoft gun.

You can read up about it on some Nerf forums.

Two main differences are:
1) Airsoft/paintball/etc... uses stored compressed gas (at very high pressure). Nerf guns don't actually have compressed gas in most cases - a spring pushes a plunger, which directs a large volume of air to push on the dart.

2) The velocity of a nerf dart puts it into a 'toy' category. There's a new line of nerf guns coming out at the moment, the 'Elite'. Australia is getting a watered-down version compared to most of the world, as the worldwide version wouldn't meet the 'toy' standard in Aus.

actually i believe in most cases airsoft guns are "springers" just like nerf. The difference is the muzzle energy and the replica weapon styling that gets airsoft in trouble with aussie laws.

Exactly, their just doesn't appear to be anything that would allow the definition of a nerf gun as a toy, regardless of muzzle energy. Same deal with BB shooting tanks, operate the same way as Airsoft, but are legal, I can't mount a 9mm pistol in a fake tank, and then it's legal, why can you do it with airsoft?

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/pai...-1226486472972

A member of the public called police at 10.40am after seeing two men walking in Mansfield St....the caller believed was an AK47 rifle.

Police swooped on the pair, but found one of the men was carrying a Nerf gun, which shoots foam balls.

He was taken into custody.

"It is illegal to have an imitation firearm on the street," she said.

Facepalm......

If it was one of those highly modified ones it *could* be fair enough. If it was stock then yeah, massive fail.

US cops would have just shot them both, just to be on the safe side.

At least the yank cops would have some idea of what a gun looks like.

Hell I've even read two of our lot nabbing a sniper who turned out to be a 10 year old in his back yard playing with a piece of wood taped to a curtain rod....

All you nerf handling terrorists out there need to be careful..

Got it all for free, still got a long shot coming as well also for free. Guess I need to start looking at modding and other stuff.

I modded my Maverick.

Removed the little plastic nubs that stop the chamber from coming all the way out, and stuck some 5c coins behind the spring. Much more powerful now.

Got a few mates who are into nerf and we're doing a bit of nerf wars.

I've got the vulcan which to be honest. rocks as support. sit behind everyone protecting the flag. main problem being reloading. takes me ages to reload it once i've used all 25.

Looking at getting a new gun and the 18 bullet clips.

question being, which guns in the current range are best with distance and don't jam too much. don't mind about the speed of it shooting. mainly distance and not jamming. Also they need to be able to accept the 18 bullet clips.

Other question being where is the cheapest i can pick up the 18 bullet clips. i can get packs of 20 bullets for like $2-3 on ebay but the clips are the expensive part.
