Default HD capable rig

i want to shelve my gamer box to the tv room and get a new system, but while testing its media playing capabilities im noticing its chugging on the 1080
rez high def movies. (mkv format mostly)

WMP's website lists minimum 1080P requirements at 1.8ghz for dual core
and 3ghz for single

my rig
AMD 4200+ x2 dual core s939 (normally running at 2.2ghz)
forsa 7900GTX
2GB adata 3200 ram (running at 400)
650 watt superflower PSU
gigabyte k8npro mobo
creative audigy z2 sound card

3dmark06
5792 3DMarks
SM 2.0 2559
SM 3.0 2472
CPU 1600

ive also put the cpu up to 2.45ghz with little effect on performance.

ive got the community codec pack and other essentials and tried all the mainstream players: winamp, vlc, zoom, WMP, Mediaplayerclassic.

is there a codec problem im unaware of? or is my system just underspecced?
