Default Incestuous offspring between dogs

Is it bad?
I mean, are they born with a higher chance of disabilities/defects?

We used to house a few dogs who had offspring of their own, where one of the pups (at an older age) mated with the mother.
Although the pups from that litter were given away, I didn't recall and odd ones at all?

So what's the deal? Is it supposed to be disadvantageous for them?

Got me thinking after reading this thread over at SA:

Probably a higher risk of congenital defects at a guess. If not at birth then probably later in life. I'll ask the missus (vet nurse), I'm guessing she'll just say you're an idiot.

Get your dogs spayed/neutered.

Probably worth mentioning that (from my understanding), that sort of breeding is more likely to cause problems then siblings.

No, the puppies won't be born with 3 heads.

Now, chances of the inbreeding enhancing undesirable traits and genetic illnesses? Yes, that's a possibility. Linebreeding and inbreeding is done by experienced breeders to enhance good traits, but it's not recommended for inexperienced breeders due to the risk of enhancing bad traits, if you get my meaning.

There's going to be nothing wrong with the puppies, really. Nothing to stop them living full lives and being loved by their human families

Also, GET YOUR DOGS SPEYED/NEUTERED.

Thanks Baringa, more the answer I was looking for.

BTW, we don't have anymore dogs... The mother had to be put down due to an illness she picked up, the father had to be put down because it was becoming more aggressive with age. We kept 2 of the original litter, where one of them got run over by a visiting family member!
And the last one turned out to live a full life, eventually passing away in it's sleep... just under 15 years of age.
