Both. It also uses "SkyHook" services to triangulate your position with WiFi.

no, unless you own an exchange server or use the apple service "mobileme" at about $110 a year

apple have stated that the additional e-mail rules out the need for "mms" the SDK agreements do not state that it could not be developed however whether the SDK's are able to produce MMS functionality is still unknown to myself and i have not read any plans

More correctly, the iPhone uses WPS (Wifi Positioning System), AFAIK a proprietary acronym/technology developed by Skyhook Wireless, which comprises of a massive reference network of the known locations of Wifi access points.

- a Skyhook employee (I'm one of the minions mapping those wifi locations).

Phone completely hung today until I plugged it back into a pc, then I could finally power cycle it. I've used it pretty heavily since launch and unfortunately it seems buggy as hell. Some downloaded apps crash, same with the iPod program, and randomly I'll open up the SMS thing and it will be slow as hell. Oh and everytime I restart my phone it has to deactivate with iTunes again. Question, how do I fix this?

There are PDf viewers, and also MMS Apps for the older iPhones (the jail broken ones) so IT IS POSSIBLE. I have been using them for ages, whether they will be "allowed" to be released on the app store is another question.
