I for one would also be very keen to know about the details of the 5D replacement, after going to the D700 launch at cameraaction on thursday night, I have to say its mighty tempting to sell all my canon gear and make the switch, the D700 is pretty much the 5D replacement I've been looking for, but I don't think its worth switching systems if canon does bring out a real replacement to the 5D and not just their usual we will update a model a little bit.. plus Im not that big of fan of the nikon ergonomics :P

I should have added this to my post perhaps ...

You are not the first person to ever to "have insider info" and thus skepticism runs high.

has the d700 been officially launched? ie selling units? it isnt even proven but you say its better than the 5D which has proven for the past 3 years? to be an awesome camera.

Yes the D700 is available for purchase. See ^catalyst's posts in this thread.

I went out and took photos with my 5D today. Worth a lot more to me than a new 5D Mark II camera which isn't available yet

As far as a 5D replacement goes. It'll need to be something very special, whether its very cheap and excellent image quality or expensive(ish) and well put together/featured.

or

D700 = win.

sorry, my post was pre-coffee. Posting from my phone so sorry for no line breaks etc. I called my friends mobile and it said they're still away on their voicemail but i thought they'd be back, i left a message and hopefully will get a call back. I'm as much in suspense as others, not that i'm looking to replace my 5d, i'm just curious

sorry, i wasn't trying to be impatient, i just interested in if/when the new cameras where coming out and if they are worth waiting for (looking at upgrading soon.)

i was really just trying to give the thread a bit of a bump as you said you would know something on friday, and thought that you probably just hadn't got around to posting anything yet.

I was actually playing with the D700 on thursday night, and cameraaction had stock when it went on sale on friday morning. While its a big improvement over the 5D in nearly everything except perhaps resolution and the crazy amount of buttons on their interface, I will admit I was impressed with it, but after thinking about it, its not impressive enough for me wanting to sell my canon gear to swap over to nikon. Interestingly enough I went to cameraaction on friday night and they still had a few left in stock...

Note I also know someone who works in cameraaction so Ive pretty much had a play with the 5D, D3, 1D, 1Ds, 30D, 40D and D700, its handy just working right around the corner

I never thought I would say this... but it kind of kills me to not be able to comment in these threads anymore. (and i certainly hope I don't get in trouble for saying that much)

As an aside, having used a D700 (and a D3), I can see why some people would love Nikon so much, but having gotten used to the 5D and the Canon echo system, it is very hard for me to switch.
