Default Melbourne Open House

Melbourne opened its doors today for the Melbourne Open House intiative, part of the Melbourne International Design Festival. I'm not so sure that they'd anticipated the amount of interest in this, as we turned up to the Manchester Unity (classic Neogothic building) at about 10:30, then waited almost two hours to get up the top.

Was it worth it? Hell yeah.

Ahh that's awesome, I want one in Brisbane. Great idea.

I love the one of the street. So rarely do you see images of Melbourne from above. All the leafless winter trees make it very unique. Cars strewn across the tram tracks is very Melbourne too lol.

I got the feeling it was far more popular than what the organisers had anticipated.
Next year I'm sure it will be held over a weekend instead of just one day.

On with the photos,

This table was dropped in by crane when they were constructing the building.
At the time, it was the largest single peice of pane glass to be imported to Australia.

Council House 2
This building has just about every eco technology out there built into it. This PDF explains it far better than I can.

Note the wavy roof and cooling radiators.

The yellow things are wind turbines, which help cut energy consumption to just 13% compared to the old council building.

All in all it was a great day, I hope next year they are better prepaired for the big crowds!

Love that boardroom, it's like something out of the Godfather. Might have to speak with management tomorrow, they're renovating one of ours at the moment...

Nice photos doigal

I went to this today. Couldn't believe some of the wait times - so many people! The Regent Theatre was awesome, as was the Capitol Theatre.

Wish this was done more often!

oh shit!!!

these photo's are awesome!!!!!

my favourite subject(melbourne) from perspectives not normally available to the general public....

.. brilliant!

I would have loved to check all of these sites out in the flesh, but by the sounds of it, the queue was already big enough...

I work in the arcade near the corner of flinders & swanston street; so to be able to see these everyday places and objects in such light is breathtaking!!!!!
