Unhappy Help with my HIS HD 4870

Hi there, i am a new user here and this is my first post.
I recently purchased a piece of HIS HD 4870 and sold my old little XFX 8600 GT to my friend. I happily plunged the new toy to my Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2 motherboard and uninstalled my forceware and installed the catalyst 8.7.
I heard there is a fan problem with the 4800 series so i flashed my card to the diamond oced bios and having a better fan control and a slightly oced 820/1100.
So everything went fine and i thought it's about time to run a 3d mark test to test the stability, and the result shocked me.

The score is unreasonably low, i checked the posts the 4870s should at least run a 14000 score in 3dmark2006@1280x1024 default settings.
What's happening to my card?
Can anyone help me?

You have a very low clocked CPU, that is holding you back alot. 3Dmark 06 relies alot on CPU for a portion of the total 3dmark score.

Hmm i would still expect more even with a 1.8 core 2.

Back in the day a p4 3g with 6950 ultra sli would get like 8000

No that's actually about right. It's the bottleneck. No way can you even think of 10k at under 2.0GHz on a dual core.

You might also consider whether it plays your games much better than your 8600GT. And that's a no brainer. Synthetic benchmarks don't mean squat unless you care about the number.

you could be cpu limited (most probably). However let me tell you my story.

I had a 8800gt 512mb and I benched it in 3d06 before swapping it out for my new 4870 i bought 3 weeks ago. It scored ~8.5k marks. This was on a e2160@3.2ghz and in vista. The 4870 scored ~9.5k marks and after a fresh reinstall of vista got just over 10k. I thought it was the cpu, so i bought an e8400. I still got the same scores. Also every time i ran 3d06, return to proxycon and the water dragon scene were jerky and dropping frames.

After a few days of rebuilding and some misdiagnosis, I found the real culprit. It turned out digsby, a MSN messaging client clone, was screwing around with 3D performance. After every reinstall I would always install digsby straight away so I could chat with mates. Once I removed it, I got over 14k 3d06 marks and all the stuttering i used to get in my games (like race driver grid and quake wars) was gone (they also stuttered on my 8800gt). so if its stuttering, theres a chance a background process is causing drama with your games.

Another story. With my old 8800gt 512mb, I decided to make a spare gaming rig for anyone who cared to drop around. I had an old x2 3800 setup. it scored ~7.4k with the cpu at 2.0ghz and ~8.5k with the cpu at 2.4ghz.

Overclocking your c2d cpu is pretty easy though. Get it to ~2.8ghz and you should see the 4870 reach its full potential.

3dmark06 loves the cpu , trust me oc your cpu or upgrade cause it like having a gun with out ammo. I have a e3110 (e8400 eqiv) and after taking it from 3.0ghz stock to 3.6ghz my crysis benchmark went through the roof. Also use the Asus top bios it better then the diamond and more stable, I just used ati bios editor and remaped fanspeeds for mine. Like everyone here is saying your cpu is the bottle neck and another thing 3dmark doesnt mean nothing, grab crysis benchmark ect and use real game benchies to get an idea of improvment.
