I thought this wasn't the case?

Didn't it state that overclocking was not shit somewhere in this thread?

I seriously doubt Nehalem will be 50% faster clock for clock. Bullshit IMO.

From what we've seen it's like... less than 20%.

Seen that ugly PS cooler?

Not that the CPU can't oc, that due to the memory controller being integrated into the CPU, you can only give RAM a certain amount of volts before you you end up fucking the CPU.

Pretty hectic...

Don't you also need high voltages to achieve really low latencies?

I wouldn't be surprised if Core i7 can genuinely give 50% better performance than a Core 2 Duo clock-for-clock - as long as you choose the applications carefully. Core i7 seems to be good at things that can use all the cores, so if you pick a game that can do that then Core i7 will look good. Most games don't even use two cores properly, so in real-world benchmarks Core i7 will tend to be only marginally quicker than Core 2.

I want to test that. I hardly ever benched my G.Skill 1800 HZ's below 2v

Anyone who plans to carry over their current DDR3 should be doing a bit of testing at 1.6v or so to see what they can do.

I'll be buying a triple channel set anyways

I ain't investing in these bullshit products when my overclocked Q9450 will spasm over their 2.93GHz un-overclockable Nehalem.

Nehalem is compromised by it's shit overclocking ability from what we've heard.
Apparently it OCs ok..it just you cant push too many volts thru it. I dont know you LN2 boys are goin to do though?

4.5ghz on air for the top end models and 4ghz on air for the cheapest sounds decent to me!

I think the whole point of the nehalem cpu is server based and you will find that it outperforms in this arena.

Anyone with wallets of with shitloads cash will upgrade. People with C2Q's know that it's got enough juice for another year or so.

agreed, i was thinking of upgrading from my phenom 9500 overclocked but im happy with it and no game really seems to be held back by the cpu (need to upgrade my 3870 for farcry 2, fallout 3 etc lol)

You don't need shitloads. i7 will be actually cheaper than C2D or C2Q. But I agree, with a good running Penryn system you have no reason to upgrade to i7 - for the time being.

Might bring out the bench this week end .....

I know i can do 1840-7-6-5-15 @ 2v.

Not even sure if i can em at 1.6v.

*coughs*

Uhhh, care to perhaps provide a breakdown of how that works?

[edit, about the cost, not the fact that a good dual or quad will see you right for a while]

I've got two kits of Dominator DDR2-1800 C7 and one of the sticks died in one of my kits (go figure it was my best stick in the best kit - sigh) and now I'm wondering whether it is even worth sending for RMA or just test it all as a triple channel kit instead of sitting around waiting for the triple kits to arrive... really dunno about this one =/

It's not always about the size of your wallet dude. It's also about the amount of passion you have for the technology and what you do with it.

Before I got picked up into the industry I admit to paying out a lot of cash and my only reason for being a poor student was because I worked my arse off on weekends to afford my expensive computer habits.

If you're passionate about what you do, I believe it's true that you eventually get to a level in which you start to be able to get things that in the past were not easily or at all obtainable. For instance, two years ago I'd never think I'd ever get the chance to bench with extreme edition chips.

So, it's a bit of a cop-out to say that only those with fat wallets will be involved in Nehalem when it first drops.
