Well I'm going by the processor you have. I just remember there being a huge shortage of Q9450's when they were released (hardly anyone was able to get them). I just thought the same thing might happen with Nehalem on launch.

And there is no point buying them before released like you said as the prices will be jacked up.

Enjoy....roadmap for 2009 (for detail as the year goes by). Processors with a > sign in front of them mean they are being replaced by something faster...and yes these processors being released in Nov 2008 will be replaced by new version by Q2 2009.

By the looks of things, it sure is in Q2 '09. This seems similar to the 65nm quad replacement cycle of QX6700 --> QX6800 --> QX6850 or the 45nm QX9650 --> QX9770.

My assumption also would be that the new chip to take out the i7 940 (also Q2 '09) will be an i7 960 --> I believe the 5 in 965 denotes the Extreme Edition and thus unlocked multiplier but haven't got any confirmation on whether the numbers in the model names meaning anything like they have for all the Core micro-architecture chips. It would be like the when the QX9770 overtook the QX9650 as top dog and later the Q9650 arrived.

Expect the next speed bump then, the 965 runs at 24 x 133 MHz. I guess we will get 25 or 26 x 133 Mhz in Q2 2009.

"Clarksfield"

Mobile Nehalem chips may come in late 2009

Quote:
Intel is gearing up to release the first versions of its Nehalem chip family next month, with the scheduled launch of its Core i7 desktop processors. But users will have to wait much longer to get their hands on the mobile version of the new chip.

The mobile version of Nehalem, codenamed Clarksfield, will “be in production beginning in the second half of 2009,” Intel said on Monday, without saying when the chips would be available commercially. The company did not elaborate on whether the reference to production means full volume production or limited pilot production of the processors.

Either way, this production schedule suggests users may not see Clarksfield until late next year.

Clarksfield will be produced using the same 45-nanometer production process that’s used to make Intel’s current chip lineup. The upcoming chip will be at the heart of the next version of Intel’s Centrino laptop chip package, called Calpella.
It's a bit disappointing that it takes 1 more year for the mobile Nehalem variant considering that mobile usage is becoming the dominate form of computing.
