Default upgrade hdd & transfer data from another computer

Recently I had another thread about upgrading the ram in my toshiba a100. very easy job and all turned out fine.

Now I want to put one of these $105 320gb hard drives in and shift a bunch of data from my desktop onto the laptop.

Questions :

- the recovery disc provided with my laptop, is this likely to do a full windows install when I put a fresh hard disc in?
- and will the new hard disc’s formatting take place with the above process?
- whats the easiest way to get the data off my desktop (80gb approx) onto my laptop – dvd burner on desktop is not working and I don’t have an external hard drive. Cable?
- Are there any traps for new players when it comes to swapping hard drives in laptops?
