Rather than having to plug the PW into a 3rd party hotshoe the 580EXII has a pc port that the PW plugs into directly. F@rmboy is of the belief that this allows ettl info to be transmitted. F@rmboy does not have a 580EXII (yet) so he can't confirm it.

That PC socket is a sync only, no extra info. I believe they used to (maybe still do?) have a little 3-pin jigger in there that could be used for wired TTL, but wired TTL is totally un-cool.

Why oh why do speedlites not have wireless transmitting? PW's have been around for some time and you would think that going from IR to wireless would be a natural progression for flash manufacturers.

These look good, and may purchase a transmitter, and two reciever. I recently bought the alienbee cybersync, as my remotes, and have been so impressed by there range etc, compared to the pocketwizards.

I consider them as good as the pocketwizards, in range etc, but can't do camera remote. One thing pocket wizards have going for them.

Radio frequencies. Certain countries have restrictions on what radio freqs. can be used by Joe Public. I believe most cheap radio triggers probably contravene those regulations, but a huge company like Nikon/Canon probably couldn't get away with it.

They don't.

I bought it from someone in the USA, who didn't need them.

Or they'd have to have separate frequencies for each country, then you wouldn't be able to buy bodies from overseas or use your AU body in other countries.

Will be interesting to see the success rate of the IR LEDs vs budget radio hot shoe systems (GI et al)

Maybe make the frequency selectable through the menu on both body and flash?
I think CE PocketWizards use 433mhz and FCC use 344mhz.

i could have used it last week, bloody PW's wouldnt work 50m away, admittedly i was in dense bush but it still should have worked, it was pissing me off

The '3-pin jigger' is actually used to trigger a camera rather than a flash (if you're referring to CM-N3 part which looks somewhat like this: http://www.av-hardware.no/images/products/PWCM-N3.jpg)
