A 9-minute long developer walkthrough clip was leaked on the net a couple of days ago, its about a THQ Australia-developed game called Warhammer 40K: Space Marine.
There is no official press release or other announcement from THQ about this, but Space Marine is a third-person 'brawler' with an emphasis on 'up close and personal' melee combat. Its apparently being developed for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Youtube'd copies of the trailer are rather grainy, its best to see the embedded 'leaked' trailer with higher res on one of the following links: http://games.tiscali.cz/news/news.asp?id=29130&r=top http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/54596 I'm interested to see more of this game, the only other Warhammer license-based game I'm aware of that even comes close to this gameplay style is the FPS shooter Fire Warrior I think. Except of course, the effectiveness of ranged weapons like the bolter seems nerfed or diminished in the trailer... presumably to emphasize the melee combat gameplay instead of run and gun? |

In before the "looks like Gears of War" crowd chime in, just remember that 40k had chainswords years before they were even a glimmer in Cliffy B's eye.
I'm very excited about this game, looks awesome! I particularly love those little slow-mo cut scenes.

good observation, I didn't think about it before but Gears of War's third-person view plus the chainsaw melee is comparable to Space Marine.
I like what I've seen though, the outdoor areas look great, more combos/finishing moves to be added in, the human grenade move. In the trailer, the Space Marine is an Ultramarine if I'm not mistaken(?), with a standard-looking jetpack on his back. It wasn't discussed or shown in the trailer, but if they make it operable so a player can use short jet-powered jumps throughout the battlefield, that would be huge fun combined with the melee chainsword combat. Regardless of who had chainsaws first it still looks like Gears of Warhammer.
Looks pretty cool though for a first build.

bout time they make something like this!
edit: after watching the trailer, I am nursing a semi. this is EXACTLY how I would have pictured a WH40k universe. Dark, gothic. space marines are actually the right size. Chaos taunting the marines. Holy fuck, I am excited beyond belief!

yes. I hope we can select our own chapter though. Although I did collect Ultramarines, I don't like how they are the generic space marine... Especially for a game like this, a Blood Angel marine is much more suited.
ps: It's not a jetpack, just a normal power generator backpack. Jetpacks are huge (and I hope they include them in this game as well!) |

This looks like some seriously good shit. I always kinda had the idea that GOW was made as a 40k game but they missed out on licensing ![]() This looks awesome, hope there's the scope for some Space Hulk action in there... break out the Terminators boys! Man I'd love to see a modern remake of that. Tactical squad based combat in tight corridors. Semi? Hell, I'm fully barred up now

I really don't like the idea of those little kill cinematics for every time you do a fancy kill on somebody. Keep them by all means, but keep it from the in-game perspective. It does look Gears like, so naturally they should draw some inspiration from it from the game mechanics.

I like what i see, and I hope the Cinemaction Moments can be turned off in the options when it is released.
If there is no Death Company and/or Space (Crusade) Hulk expansions there will most definatly be mods getting around. |
