Default Newer Nokias

Hey guys, I've previously owned an N80 which died and am now using a hand-me-down N70. Both phones are generally quite good - until they get a significant amount of data (SMS, logs, whatever) into them, and then they crawl. I can ofen type text messages faster than they display them, and things just turn to shit. Problem is, they only seemed to do it as they got used a lot - a factory reset would probably make them quite ok again for a while.

This makes me a little concerned about the newer nokias that are also symbian based. I'm considering phones like the N95 and the like, and was wondering whether they've beefed up the processor and whatever else it takes to keep them nice and responsive, or whether they also go downhill. I think I liked the look of the N78, not sure if I can find it here anywhere (want camera, wifi, take a 4gb card, but don't like sliders/flips or cramped qwerty keyboards).

Went from an N80 crawler to a 6500 classic, speed times are instantaneous.

So they really have improved then?

The nokia site doesn't seem to list the processors used, which isn't surprising. Will have to look around and find a more informative site.

The N95 uses a 206Mhz ARM processor and has 56MB RAM and 8MB ROM.

got the Mrs a 6110 navigator.

- 40 MB user memory

- ARM 11 369 MHz processor

it's quite responsive, not sure how it will go over time but atm it's good.

the newer nokias are quite a bit faster now and you can also see videos on youtube of the nokia N95-1 v the N95 8Gb the 8gb a lot faster. I know how you feel my E65 was very sluggish even when opening the menu but now i have moved onto the iphone

All versions of the N95 use a TI processor running at 330MHz. The N95-2, N95-3 and N95-4 have twice the RAM of the N95-1.

Just about every new S60 Nokia phone run the same (or similar) processors. Gone are the days of the N70+N80+etc slowness - thankfully.

I was in the same boat. Flip/slide phones suck, needed WiFi, etc. I got the Nokia E51. It's very responsive. Apparently it'll take the new Sandisk 16GB SDHC cards (even though Nokia say they only support 4GB cards). I saw that on a couple of sites. I'm thinking I'll get myself a little bluetooth keyboard next time I go on a big trip and leave my laptop at home. All I need is web browsing and email.

- 130 MB user data memory
- 96 MB SDRAM memory
- ARM 11 369 MHz processor

Thanks mate, that's some good info. Especially if it does actually take 16gb cards (that site you linked to actually states 8gb cards, which are sdhc so should be fine with 16gb I guess).

Only problem is I believe that it doesn't have a normal 3.5mm headphone socket, which I would LOVE it to have. That's something that I think the N78 does have.

2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptors aren't that hard to find

As for the 16GB card:

AFAIK in Australia, you can only get E51's through Telstra agents or through some of the cheapo online phone retailers. Should be able to pick one up outright for around $350 (last time I checked was a while ago).

My 6120c is much faster than my 6680 (similar to the N70). So i don't think there's much for you to be concerned about.

But the Nokia 6500 is not a S60 symbian handset like all the other Nokia phones mentioned by the OP. I get the impression that the OP is including S40 symbian handsets like the 6500 as part of his query.

Yea, as Bluubox said, that's incorrect specs you've given:

N95 Specs:

CPU:
Dual CPU
CPU Type: ARM 11
CPU Clock Rate: 332 MHz
3D Graphics HW Accelerator

Memory:
Max User Storage: 160 MB
NAND Memory: 256 MB
SDRAM Memory: 64 MB
~18 MB Free Executable RAM Memory

I've sort of assumed that any MicroSDHC compatible (officially compatible) handset will take 16GB cards. Some specs say only 4gb, or 8gb, but i think that could be just the largest size at the time of specs printed.
My 6120 which is not microSDHC compatible (2gb max), has an 8gb microSDHC in it at the moment.

FYI, Sandisk 16GB MicroSDHC card for AUD$107 delivered:

http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Micro-SDHC...luding-Adaptor)

Genuine Sadisk, comes with Mobilemate card reader.

Get an 8GB for ~AUD$40 delivered though.

I know it seems a little picky, but I really had having to use an adapter of any kind. I used to have to use an adapter on the N80 and it was a pain - sometimes I'd be at work, felt like using the phone with headphones, but didn't have an adapter there. Sometimes I'd have the PSP with me, wanted to listed to something on the phone, and the headphones I kept with the PSP didn't fit of course. I once I was travelling and forgot headphones, and couldn't just grab a set from the airline or a store at the airport etc.

Standards are great

The N80 had a pop-port, and the adaptor to use standard headphones was HUGE.

The E51 has a 2.5mm jack, so you'd hardly notice the adaptor.

BTW, 2.5mm is a standard...
