Epic fail?

The only epic fail I can see is the prices, but that's just the AUD's fault.

Now that I think about it, the price increase isn't really that much, I paid $1849 for my 2.16ghz macbook about a year ago. So $2099 is only an extra $250 with the dropping aussie dollar.

Interesting that Apple's entry level laptops can now power the 30" displays...

Great, one big button. That means Macbooks now come with a game-show buzzer. This is appropriate as every time I look at them I hear the 'wrong' sound from Family Feud b-bow.

I actually don't mind the look of the new macbooks and macbook pro's. The prices are a bit crap but I guess that's expected because of the exchange rate. I'm quite happy with my current macbook and don't think that its worth upgrading yet. Probably best to wait another 8 or so months when snow leopard is released and then see whats current then.

The MBP already has the discrete graphics (and used less power with it, the 9600 isn't that much faster than the 8600), also supported dual-link industry standard DVI and both the MB and MBP were lighter without the new enclosure. DDR3 is overrated.

-Lack of FW800 on MB. I would guess though that the future of FW is a bit bleak considering it has neither the economy and ubiquity of USB or the speed, simplicity and economy of eSATA. Also not much word recently of FW3200 so who knows.

Still I would definitely wait until Nehalem.
That'll be another 9 months away in mobile form. The lack of firewire will bite pro audio people who will want to use this with their digi002/003... I will also miss target disk mode for rescuing these systems easily.

This may piss some early users off...

MacBook Pro requires logout to switch graphics modes

Quote:
We just spent some quality time with the dual-graphics VAIO Z, so when we heard that the new MacBook Pros had a similar two-chip layout, we assumed switching from the integrated NVIDIA 9400M to the discrete 9600M GT would be just as easy -- it's just a switch on the Sony that can be flipped anytime. Too bad that's not the case: according to a recently-posted Apple support document, switching graphics modes requires a trip to System Preferences and then a logout. Sure, it's slightly better than a total restart, but it's still a huge pain in the ass, and one we just don't understand -- if Sony can get Vista to handle it without issue, Apple should be able to get their own OS to deal. Here's hoping Apple fixes this particular bag of hurt soon -- we can't see mobile pros flocking to this feature until they can seamlessly switch between graphics modes when going from the office to the road.

As said apart from the new design it isn't really a leap forward.

45nm is still the current generation. Worth noting these are now 1066MHz FSB parts as opposed to the previous 800MHz FSB units.

From what I've seen the 9600 is definitely a step up from the 8600 series.

Took Apple a long time to drop prices when the dollar was up.
Pretty quick on the way down!

Don't forget KCP pricing is still valid until the end of October!
