Problem with the PSU theory is that the guy with the exact same symptoms as me on the HardOCP forums has a 700+ PSU.

it sounds to me either there is a memory issue(not the vga card your main ram is halting) or overheating
i have a 4870 and a 6600 and i have yet to find a game that will cause this thing to hitch
also my 6600 is at 3.3 gig though...
but still i believe it is probably one of those.

or

a power issue
the only time i had problems similar to this was when i first plugged it in to tis crap amicro 650 watter.
i changed plugs and rerouted a few things and the issue went away.
if the 12v is shared then you have problems ...if it is a split rail virtual or otherwise then try switching a few cables around.

good luck with it though as i love my card and it is a shame that so many people have issues.(but i guess it's not just ati )

ive had similar issues but with Grid (have tried all the fixes out there but still get the same problem, even thought it was my NEW HX620 when i too read about inadequite psu). However Far Cry 2 seems ok, though I havent played it much to really notice any stutters yet (along with no fps counter to watch) anyway

Try overclocking your CPU, that seems to fix my Grid issue, i have a crappy case that has really bad air flow (next to none) so my cpu temp rises fast when overclocked (high 60,70's at 3.6ghz) so i just leave it at stock cpu settings now and deal with the slow down/stutters until I get a better case with airflow, then ill work on a better cpu cooler

see sig for specs

I too had a similar issue when I got a 4870, and you *may* be in the same boat. I had major stuttering issues (running vista 32bit). I tried different psu's and cpu's, but in the end it was a certain app that was disrupting 3d performance. The app was Digsby (a IM all in one application for MSN, yahoo, etc). Could try killing processes in the task manager until you are only running bare essentials and see how it goes.

I also get the slow downs in Far Cry 2. Goes from 40+ fps to low 20s. It seems to happen in certain areas if you look in the right direction...also happens when I fire my gun sometimes. Running the far cry 2 hotfix drivers and XP 32bit.

I think it is a driver issue, I'll try again when the new ATI drivers come out...

Have you checked your event log ? I got pauses in Crysis Warhead in DX10 mode. It's got something to do with my atikmdag file. Alot of other people have the same problem and the only other way to solve it is a format and reinstall.

Can that shiat be disabled? I'm new to ATI stuff but so far, more annoyances than I've had with Nvidia cards.

Grr. Hearing about stuff like this makes me angry, I'm so keen to get a 4870, but it seems as though too many people have random problems with the card.

That's why you go get a GTX 260 core216 and OC it yourself for near stock GTX 280 performance .

Everyone's very quick to blame the card directly, when many problems in this thread alone, it's been the cause of other things like IM clients and insufficient PSU's and not-well-ventilated cases

The same happens to me in Vista 32 Farcry 2 and Crysis. After a while the lag will get worse than when i started. And with COD4 it does it after playing a couple games that day i go to COD4 and will get low fps droops at the worst times lol. I think my psu may have had it i have a Q6600 and 2gb DDR2 1066 but it wont overclock i can get it to 3.5ghz stable in testing apps but when i run a game it reboots. Prob a PSU issue.

I'm running a Q6600 at 3.5 GHz as well, had no issues with it, but I have a spare 550W PSU (from Japan) which might solve the issues if it's power related ... So will try that. I didn't expect to get much out of the Coolermaster 460W that came free in the case :-|

I use a 460w Coolermaster psu that came with my CM-690, it has no issues running an overclocked HD4870 and E8400 @ 4.2ghz. I used too have issues of slowdowns which i found out to be the cause of my lame ram.

Changed the ram and in Far Cry 2 Ive capped my fps to 35 to prevent the time of day glitch which makes you look like your warping when you move. Doesnt fluctuate whatsoever.

Overall i havent had any problems listed by any other user .

You could try just running the Japan PSU for the video card and seeing if that helps.

Aditionally, test it in a mates pc. Hell, most OCAU-ers will do it for a couple of beers. :P
