Just a quick play around I had today.
Was limited serverly by the memory.

Intel I7 920 | Gigabyte X58-DS4 | 3x1GB ASUS 1333Mhz DDR3 | TRUE120 Black | 2x Sapphire 4870 1GB | Western Digital 80GB SATA | Toughpower 850W |

Highest clock I acheived:

Fastest SuperPi 1M

Fastest Wprime run stable

Highest 3D Mark 06

Highest 3D Mark Vantage

Hey I just bought a new I7 Rig But only got the stock cooler at the moment so not sure if I should overclock yet. It's a I7 920, P6T Deluxe OC Palm, 6Gb kit Patriot 1600mhz ram, 4870x2, 850w thermaltake and antec 1200 case. Just wondering whats the normal cpu and motherboard temps at idle cause I get cpu 40 to 45 and Mb 38 to 40 deg celius. Is that normal for a stock cooler these I7 seem hotter than the 45nm Quads.

yeah its normal dude.

on a side note, anyone know why when i run benchmarks at 3.0 i get the exact same 3d marks on both vantage and 3dm06 as to when i go to 3.2, when i say exact, i litterally got EXACTLY the same score .... normal ?

did you check if the turbo mode is kicking in?
20x vs 21x vs 22x makes differences or similarities.

4Ghz on air. 1.38 vcore, 1.35 QPI/DRAM core, 1.64 DRAM bus.

Temps aren't too bad for air.

Needs an overnight prime at this stage tho.

Quick question guys, does this seem normal...

Idle Temps :

Core #1 : 48
Core #1 : 48
Core #3 : 55
Core #1 : 48

when i put the cpu fan at 100% all the time it drops about 1 degree per core, but core 3 always seems to be 5 or 6 higher than the rest.

Also, im thinking of pushing 3.6ghz or higher today on the stock cooling, if the cpu hits 85-90 while benching is that still safe ? im not planning to run it 24/7.

You shouldn't use the stock cooler as those are high temps for that voltage

mm bugga.

another question, using that overclocking pdf guide, i did the exact same settings, and the pc just doesnt boot. soon as i hit "save settings and exit" in bios it just switches the pc off. when i try power it back on it starts for a few seconds then turns off again.

the only way i can get it back to normal is buy clearing the cmos back to default with the button on the back of the board.

Those temps are way to hot ur going to fry ur cpu. I wouldnt let it go past 65 deg 70 is max.
