Default MSI GX720

I'm looking at getting this laptop:

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?f...d_no=1521#menu

from here:
http://www.digitan.com.au/product.ph...at=1481&page=3

Description for the lazy:
MSI GX720-P86324P, Intel PM45, P8600 2.4G, 1066 FSB, 320GB (5400 RPM, SATA), 4GB DDR2, NV Gfo9600 512MB DDR3,MXMII, 17" WSXGA+, 2 MP Cam, 8X DVD+/- RAM,TV Tuner, Bluetooth, 6 Cell battery, Gaming Mouse + Bag, Vista Home Premium.

I've noticed a number of sites have conflicting information with screen sizes/resolutions, so should i assume they have made mistakes and just take what the MSI website says about the laptop?

Any one have this laptop and can comment on it? Perhaps any one with an MSI laptop can tell me thier experience.

I've purchased some MSI stuff a number of years ago and it wasnt so great hence me asking.

Unless some one knows of a better laptop for around the same price or cheaper :P
Primary use is gaming.

Ta.

Take a look at the HP DV5. Can get one with pretty much the same specs, bit cheaper.

i should mention i'd rather a 17" than a 15" looks like the dv5 has no 17" variations on static ice

Glad I noticed this thread. I've been pawing through notebook specs for a while now trying to work out what I want and this one has just been added to my list. So far as I can see though it doesn't beat out the HP dv7-1105tx.

MSI GX720-P86324P, Intel PM45, P8600 2.4G L2 cache 3 MB, 1066 FSB, 320GB (5400 RPM, SATA), 4GB DDR2, NV Gfo9600 512MB DDR3,MXMII, 17" WSXGA+, 2 MP Cam, 8X DVD+/- RAM,TV Tuner, Bluetooth, 6 Cell battery, Gaming Mouse + Bag, Vista Home Premium.

HP dv7-1105tx, T9400 2.53 GHz Level 2 cache 6 MB 1066 MHz, 640 GB (2x320MB 5400RPM), 4096 MB DDR2, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512MB, 17.0" WXGA+, 8X DVD±RW with Double Layer Support & LightScribe, Bluetooth, 8-cell Lithium-Ion, HP Mobile Remote Control, Vista Home Premium

They can both be had for pretty well the same price but the HP has a quicker CPU, more cache and double the HDD. The only real claim the MSI has is the incredibly high resolution. I'm hard-pressed to choose between them but I think the HP would take it.

Also, I'd go with the MSI website for resolution specs... Most retailers are probably just getting confused between WXGA+, WSXGA+, etc and putting the wrong figures in somewhere.

resolution is more important than a slightly faster cpu and double the hdd, i'm gonna have an external 1tb drive for storage anyways.

The higher res is more important for me as i can fit more stuff on screen, which is an issue i've had with the GF's laptop

Yeah certainly makes sense. I've been looking at the 320Gb vs 640Gb and they're really not worth comparing. 640Gb is just more to lose if someone knicks it or I break the thing

I came across this thread while actually doing a search on info on where to buy the MSI laptop. Saw it reviewed in PC Powerplay and for the price looks a good deal - especially when I have to leave my PC at home while I go work in Europe for a year - will miss my games so need a decent gaming notebook (plus use it for work of course)

None of the stores I have used in the past seem to have the MSI even advertised. Austin Computers and an online store Affordable Laptops (both in WA) have them listed - $2149 & $2070, but the only other places I have seen them is on places like ShoppingSquare.com.au for $2040 (Google search!!) - but I have never shopped with places like that. Trust is a bit of an unknown with them.

Hopefully someone else will know a bit.

Looks like you can get it from EYO dropshipping: MSI GX720

Just remember this is an older model notebook and pretty much everything coming out from now on seems to be at least 10% more expensive, usually nearer to 20%. If you want something cheap, don't wait.

I own a GX720.
pretty sweet laptop, i havent actually ran any benchamrks as i use Bigpond wireless and dont want 2 chew up download limits on programs i will use once or twice.

I can play Red Alert 3 in ultra high detail, and at a decent res. (still testing, only just bought it)

Crysis wars -
Well this game runs freaking awesome for the first 2 levels with all settings set to gamer, and a res of 1024x768. when u get to the ice levels you HAVE to turn the graphics down a little bit and tweak around (just a few shaders and such) still looks awesome and runs fairly smooth.

havent really gotten many other games, as i have mainly been studying electronics.

All in all i would get this laptop.

only thing i dont like is, that the screen refresh rate is locked to 59hz, and some games like Bf2 and Deadspace (mainly EA games from what i have noticed) have a spack attack and decided not to work.
I am planning on trying a dual boot with xp and seeing if refresh rate is changeable...

hope i helped a little.

The HP DV5 only has a local 1 Year Warranty where the MSI has 2 Year International Warranty. Plus I had to many issues with HP Pavilions (or most of HP retail chain notebooks)
