Default To Repair or Replace

So, as per my other thread my laptop has had something spilt on it. I've torn it down to pieces and it seems there are a couple of chips either melted or legs broken on them.

Laptop is getting a bit old now, I was thinking of getting a new one in the next 6 months anyway. It is a HP DV1000 which is basically still stock bar the hard drive.

Question is to repair motherboard/replace with one for ~$250 or Interest free a new one? What would you do?

well if youve spilled something on it i'd reccomend using some sort of evaporating cleaner on it (ive heard rubbing alcohol works well, but im not sure). as far as buying a new mobo i'd probably avoid it if i were thinking of purchasing a new lappy in the distant future...

Edit: voted candy :P

My boss bought a Fujitsu Lifebook P7120 some time ago and spilt cola on it which killed it. To cut a long story short, I have the repaired lappy. The battery sometimes decides to not work (I think it's the battery, I hope it is not the mobo), the DVD drive has stopped spinning, and it needs a ram upgrade. (Mini-Dimm or some such that are difficult to find and expensinv I suspect)

In short, there is more to a laptop than the motherboard. Buy a new one if it is old.

Time for a new laptop, I think.

If you have a decent soldering iron (preferably a station), a solder sucker, and some basic electrical knowledge i would attempt a self repair. Chips can be ordered off the net cheap, and as it is already farked u have nothing to lose except a few $$!!

go to dick smith buy a can of contact cleaner(~$18) spray the shit out of the affected area, and use a paint brush to remove any loose corrosion, wait until dry(about 30 seconds) then test

hope this helps
