Looking for a laptop. Needs to be C2D and not to heavy.

Only problem with these laptops is that they are not readily available in aus yet. If I buy something from the US I'd have to pay customs duties wouldn't I?

Looking at the Asus F6VE-B1

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66GHz
Screen: 13.3" WXGA
Memory: 4GB DDR2
Hard Disk" 320GB
Optical Drive: DVD Super Multi
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
Video Memory 512MB
Communication: Gigabit LAN and WLAN
Card slot 1 x Express Card
Dimensions 12.2" x 9" x 1.2-1.4"
Weight: 4.3 lbs.

There there is the Asus N81Vp

* Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1, 32-bit)
* Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9550 (2.66GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
* 14.1 " TFT Widescreen display with LED backlighting (1366x768)
* 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz System Memory
* ATI Radeon Mobility 4650 1GB GDDR3 Memory
* 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
* Dual Layer CD/DVD Recordable
* 1.3 megapixel integrated camera
* Atheros AR928X B/G Wireless and Bluetooth Version 2.0 + EDR
* Weight: 5lbs 11.1oz
* Dimensions: 13.5 x 10.1 x 1.6”
* Warranty: 2-year system, 1-year accidental damage
* 6-cell 11.1v 4800mAh battery

Ok, my current laptop is on it's last legs. I used to always go with IBMs, and they worked great, but when Lenovo took over I thought I'd try something different. I tried a Dell Vostro 1400, and while warranty service was great, I've had to replace the hard drive once, and the system board once. And the system board right now is getting flaky and the fan is getting waay too loud. This is after ~20 months, while my IBMs used to last 2-3 years and still be going fine.

Anyway, enough background story. I want:
C2D cpu of some sort, ~2GHz is fine.
2GB RAM min.
Any Intel or nvidia video card.
Wireless G necessary, wireless n nice but not necessary.
13.3" or 14.1" screen.
Internal bluetooth preferred.
Internal webcam preferred.

I will be running Linux on it as well, but once I find a possible laptop I'll look into driver support. It'd be great to have a laptop with no MS tax, but I doubt that's possible, so whatever MS software I get, I get, but don't bother looking too much into the OS.
I'm pretty much looking for the cheapest reliable solution. I'm not too keen on Dell any more. Lenovo I'm willing to try. I don't care about looks at all pretty much. Where should I be looking?

Well from what i recall, any purchases over $1000 dollars get dumped with some tax.

Well you could go for their thinkpad series which are known for their build quality and business featues: http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary...2BFE970FDE84D5 or you can look at their IdeaPad Y430 series which seem to cover the features you want: http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary...B449C44CB64FDC

Hopefully Gigabyte's new ones should be rolling out. Really looking forward to see how their netbook tablet goes.

I hate to clutter up this thread, but can anyone recommend a decent retailer for the Ideapad series? It seems Lenovo doesn't sell them online, for some reason. I really just want to see what configurations are possible, and what they cost (pretty much what their Thinkpad page does) so I don't know if going in to a store is going to show me all the information that I want.

Dick Smith Electronics

Domayne Stores

Yeah I checked all 3 online, and I couldn't find any mention on Ideapad on any of their websites. I know I could go visit a store in the hope that they might have one somewhere, but I wanted to compare prices on various options.

Yep nothing online, i checked too. If the stores are near where you live, it may be worth dropping by.

Hi everyone, my first post on this great forum after a being a long time guest reader!!

I did a search and didnt see any Info on this Computer i want to buy! I just need some opinions on it what you people think about it for the price etc!! I have $1500 to spend on a new Laptop as the current one is desperate for an Upgrade and i spotted this and need some good opinions on it!! I work in Construction and just know enough about Computers to get me out of trouble and from what others have told me and what i have read!!!

http://www.lmc.com.au/products/Noteb...ium/2_Yrs_Wnty

I am after he biggest screen size i can get for my money with nothing less than 2.0 processor speed as i am told this a must to be running Vista. I will mainly be using the Computer for Email , Websurfing and On line game play ( Poker) etc.

I was also thinking i may downgrade to XP as i have heard some bad things from Vista but they may be BS etc etc.

Any Opinions will be greatly appreciated and i can understand you probably get a lot of these threads but i couldnt find anything regarding this particular Computer.

Cheers Chappie.

N.B I also found this review!

Would I will be able to upgrade the HDD in the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE with a OCZ Vertex Series 60GB SATAII 2.5" SSD ??

On another note, is there any new netbooks on the horizon featuring the N280?
