I know of the dell 1525 for $750 or 800 but is there anything in the 5-600 dollar bracket at the moment? looking to pick it up for christmas.

depends on the configuration you want.
probably cheapest with reasonable configuration and brand i can find is by orangeit (http://www.orangeit.com.au/) . They are selling Lenovo Thinkpad R61e (Celery 2.0 Ghz, 1GB RAM, 120 GB H/D) for $499 only. If you need a dual core processor, most likely it will be over $600 |

there's a bit of a hole in the market right now
i mean a good year ago those lenovo 3000s for $598 is a good deal maybe netbooks have taken their place? wouldn't mind a decent x4500 dual core 14" laptop

$600 lappies are rare now because of the dollar plummeting. not much you can do about it. that R61e is a great deal though
